Things That Chicken Eat That Surprised You

Mine don't like them boiled but give them to them scrambled, shell and all and they fight over the biggest piece.

Don't ask me, An egg is an egg is an egg to my taste buds. (oh and they have to be warm, fussy little ladies)

This spring I was at the feed store and saw all the baby chicks chasing each other around and fighting over a feather. It was so cute!

Tried some leftover pork roast tonight that did not go over well. They left the roast, the potatoes, and onion bits but gobbled down the carrots and leftover sweet peas. Kiddo tried giving them Cheetos yesterday and that was rewarded with what we think may have been a first attempt at crowing. Either that or the frog that particular bird ate earlier was calling for help

hahahaha they are the most wonderful rubbish goblers. Yes anything meat goes down faster than you can shake a stick at it! Try them with noodles - funny as - make it the long fettucine ones - now that is a good party trick. And porrige - they LOVE IT. Try cooking the left over porrige with potatoe skins boil them up, so the porrige is nice and mushy and see them hook into that! Nice and warm for winter they love it! This topic is too funny, love all your humor and love the happiness your babies have bought into your lives

Thanks for sharing and making me laugh!

Cheeeeeeeese!!! They jump, sit in my lap, tolerate lots of petting, talk, and - I am absolutely certain - smile, when I bring their little baggie of cheese in the morning. Forget the cheese, and I can forget any attention from my girls.

Ah the cheese reminded me! I forgot to add milk (fresh cows milk REALLY gets them going they just drink and drink and drink!) and yoghurt and icecream! We just cleaned out the freezer and had two batches of export icecream that was yuck to taste (why is the recipe so different for export - we have the worlds best iceceam in NZ with NZ recipe!). The chooks got both the two litre containers of frozen ice-cream - well can you just imagine.............a swarm of birds pushing and shoving and gobbling

and then .............. brain freeze! (head shaking)

well, the eyes rolled up and down and they shook their heads and then just dived back in again!

The rooster knew better, he stood back and waited for bits to fall on the ground which had warmed a bit.

Cunning! haha Needless to say the chooks had a fine feast from the freezer, overdate casserole dinners, frozen soups overdate and ice-cream! Would have been nice for us to eat if we remembered they were there (oh to have a good upright freezer!), never mind - my babies LOVED the treat!

One thing I have observed and this thread seems to confirm this thought is that each flock seems to have different favs. The favs seem to change from year to year, what they liked last year not necessarily this year. Some flocks seem to hate to try new things and others try everything including things they shouldn't eat like styrofoam. People seem most surprised about chickens eating meat and that sure surprised me at first. Another thing that really surprised me is sour milk the more sour the more they love it!
