I've had parakeets for years. I absolutely love them.

My canary recently passed away. She wasn't old but apparently "someone" put her cage in a place where a draft got to her. She was such a cool bird. Red factor german roller mix. She was beautiful. She sang too!

But...I would like to get another bird. I haven't had them for years, but don't remember them being as loud as canaries.

Can someone remind as to how loud budgies can get? Would it be best to get a pair or should I just keep the one?

parakeets/budgies are not a loud bird at all, they can get chatty at times, as far as more than one, that is up to you, cage space, etc.. if you want a budgie for a hands on buddy than usually you are better off getting one so that it will "bond" with you better, but if you dont care about handling and/or wont have time to truly spend with the bird, then get two, as most of them really do love companionship.

I currently have two parakeets. One of them is trained to step up and to fly to me when I call him. They (as a species) can be pretty skiddish and fear your hand. I suggest, like with any pet, to try to get it young. Or as previously posted, get a cockatiel, they're less jumpy.

I have 4 keets. They aren't tame and I don't think they will ever be. I got them from a friend that had too many. I like them. They sound pretty. They can get pretty loud but that's because theirs 4 of them. Years ago I had 1 keet. I got him from a bird farm when he was young. We selected several, they caught them, and we chose from those. The one we picked immediately stood on my daughters finger at the bird farm so he was a keeper. He learned to say hello and sat on your shoulder. He rarely made screechy noises. He usually chirped a sweet pretty chirp. If you want a buddy bird get a young one from the place that bred it.

My hubby isn't thrilled I got the birds and will jokingly say when will they die off. My reply is the day before you come home to see a young hand raised bird in the cage.
