Thinking about getting parakeets...

Does anyone have a guess as to how many lbs of pellets 2 parakeets will go through in a month? What brands do you guys use, and where do you get it? Thanks!

I don’t know about pellets but my two don’t through very much food at all. A regular 5 lb bag of seed lasts forever 😂 I’d imagine pellets would be the same especially if mixed with something. And I would get ZuPreem Naturals, Roudybush (make sure they’re small enough as they have a few sizes), Lafeber. All should be available at the regular pet store.

That said though, it may take a bit of time for them to get used to the pellets and mine never really did but those brands are usually quite well tolerated by birds. And Lafeber makes Nutriberries and popcorn type things too both of which the birds often think are treats LOL so that might help though I haven’t tried them yet. For seeds, my birds loveeeee the Kaytee Naturals. I like that one cause it doesn’t have any of the dyes or colors or anything and they don’t eat the little colored pellets anyway.

Something like this might help transition them too if they won’t eat just plain pellets. Though of course it’s not a complete diet but may help and thinking of trying it myself. They have a few different flavors/varieties too if they don’t like this one. You can click on the menu.

When I had mine years ago, they ate only seeds and grit and some treat once in a while. They never cared for anything else.
You also need to provide some cuttle bone for their beaks.
Yeah, I tried pellets and mine refused to eat them but I’m thinking of trying a few other things to help them haha but mine are very healthy anyway even on seeds. It might that I have one of those vitamin and mineral block things in there. I don’t have the cuttlebone but I think my thing has calcium in it. I might bet one of those though too. But mine love the little strawberry shaped mineral block lol

I love parakeets! They come in wonderful colors, have funny personalities, and are easy to keep. Though they can be a little bit messy-mine scatter seed hulls far from the cage as they are always playing catch me if you can with each other. One parakeet is easier to tame than if you keep two. My parakeets usually live to be 15 years old and I have a pair that are now seven and are going strong. I feed them seed mixed with small veggies-peas, corn, green beans and the occasional hard boiled egg. I have two because I know I don't have lots of time to spend with them. A bird does bond to its owner and likes to be with them all the time. Though mine are not hand tame I do interact with them. I stick my head in the cage and they will come to the nearest perch and talk parakeet to me. Keep your toys simple. Stay away from plastic and metal toys and be careful of ones that have chains. I keep my toys natural and expect them to destroy them. My parakeets really like to play with tissue paper and horse hay.

I'm not happy with the brand I'm using right now (it's an Australian one), but I'm using it while the brand I want to use (TOP's) isn't available here (because of covid).
I don't really have a clue of how fast you'll go through it :idunno

i’m not much help there sorry.....i now have 13 parakeets and 10 zebra finches so i purchase my feed in 25# bags from amazon. but for 2 caged, the 5# bag for 7.99 on amazon should last you at least a month.

Thanks for your input. I definitely want mine to be tame enough to come out of the cage. I'd even like them to be able to talk a bit.
I have two parakeets and they are very fun birds! We love them! ❤ Keep in mind that there are two types of parakeets - American parakeets, and English parakeets. From what I've seen American parakeets may mimic some things but they don't really talk. American parakeets are the ones seen in pet stores. English parakeets are much more expensive and to my knowledge are usually bought from a breeder but, they can talk. :)
