~*Third Annual Cinco de Mayo Turkey Hatch-Athon*~ all poultry welcome!

No not really. Maybe I checked on the eggs too often or maybe my birds are just getting too old and their eggs aren't as viable as before. I had done a hatch right before the easter hatch and had about a 98% hatch rate. Now almost all of those eggs were from a friend. I am using the same incubator, it is at the same settings, so I am baffled... And disappointed.. However at least I didn't get totally skunked.. I do have some Easter chicks :)

Easter HAL chicks are peeping, might be pipping but I can't hover today - found a new sinkhole in an occupied pasture this morning.

Penelope is moved into the old feed shed (only keep mineral salt now, so there's lots of room in a vented & lockable building). I built a 4'x8' x 15" plywood nest box, layered the floor with straw flakes, and made a depression down at one end. I took the eggs first, put them in a carton and wrapped a towel around it & set it up there, then put her in a box & moved her. left her in the box while I positioned the eggs, then set her at the other end of the area. She looked confused for a minute or two & then stepped over and slid onto them - and is still there. These are new shipped eggs, due to hatch on the 15th.

With shipped eggs, since they are supposed to be incubated upright, how is the hatch rate if you stick them under a broody?

I have one more set of chicken eggs showing up in a few days, and then a few quail eggs....

When I put shipped eggs set #3 into the incubator.... well..... I am gonna have to stack when set #4 shows up (i think the quail eggs will be fine, just slip between the chicken eggs).

I do however have a Cochin who has been very broody this past week.....

What would be the best choice for my hatch rate?

1. Stack all eggs in my wonderful Brinsea

2. Put shipped eggs, after letting them settle for a few hours, under the Cochin

3. Put shipped eggs that have been in my incubator for almost 2 weeks, under the Cochin.

Dixie sitting on 7 chicken and 4 turkey eggs due to hatch next weekend. She looks serious!

Just candled my eggs today, had to set a few days later than everyone else. I have only 5 shipped turkey eggs developing, the sole Narrangansett egg of ours set is developing, 2 Polish eggs set are doing great and the 6 Silkie eggs I set are doing wonderful. Since I had some spare room I added 5 of my Narrangansett eggs in there now also. Talk about having a staggered hatch. Shouldn't have done that but I can not let those Narr eggs go to waste!

ARGH, and the two duck eggs are developing awesome. I always seem to forget about those!
