Oh, wait....

Run for your life!

I though I smelled something last week.

A few years back I was taking a night class once a week and it was warm weather not warm enough to leave the windows open 24/7 but I came home and thought my mom let the cat out and was on the sidewalk my first thought was to run up to it and grab it and carry it in for the night, I decided not to because the cat doesn't like being held or carried that much as I was walking around the car, and I realized the hair stood out too much on the legs and the tail was waaaayyyyy toooo puffy and I realized it was a pole cat so I made enough noise that the skunk made it's way up the sidewalk and never sprayed me directly when he got to the porch he turned and went into the yard, but he just gave little puffs of scent to warn me not to get too close, I still needed a change of clothing and a shower, but was glad that was all needed, and not a tomato juice bath.....

Yeah, I get worried when I'm out and about and I smell those little 'puffs' of scent as I'm not sure which way to go.

I ain't arguing with that!

I was out one night checking our cows and a small snow squall came up and as I was heading down the hill I saw what I thought was a cat hurrying up the hill on the same trail I was on. As it got closer I realized it was not a cat but a skunk coming straight at me with it's head down. I headed south and started yelling so it heard me and the skunk went north.

DH shot one that was in the shed where we park our hay baler. He had to strip down to his BVD's before he was allowed in the house and I almost hosed him off in the yard too!

I keep this formula posted on the frig: 1 pint hydrogen peroxide, 1/8 cup baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon liquid soap

Works great, even when having to make it and wash the dog at 2 am. Wish I had known about when a skunk got into and sprayed the kitchen. Why is it always at 2 in the morning????

Good luck!!!

I like skunks. I have lived in peaceful coexistance with them for years. There were a lot of skunks where I lived in California, and there are two living around my house here in Missouri. They have lived here a lot longer than I have. They know I am here and I know they are here. I see them once in a while at night or very early in the morning. One of them is almost white.

Skunks only spray if they are very frightened or angry. When I am outside at night I take care to make some noise so nocturnal critters know I am around. Once in a great while one of the dogs gets sprayed. The peroxide mixture takes care of it. By the way, don't try to wash anyone that has been sprayed by a skunk with plain water. It makes it worse.

I've trapped a couple in my attempt to thin out the racoons. Releasing them can be tricky but with a bed sheet and a bungee cord, they get to go free very easily. They don't seem upset. They just amble out on their merry way.
