This Makes Me Cringe...

Laura, I get what you are saying. I have a short story here, one of my relatives ate at McDonalds for over 30 years she was put in a home when she was about 65 as she suffered from dementia and for a week or so she would not eat the food there. They called my sister and she told them to wrap the food in McDonalds wrappers and then she would eat it. It worked.

That makes me think of myself as a kid. My mother used to make this horrible popcorn on the stove top using a pan and it was always half burnt. So I'd put it in a bag instead of a bowl and pretend it was movie theater popcorn and I SWORE it tasted better in a bag.

I knew some crackhead parents many years ago that fed their 2 little boys fast food and that was it. It was very sad and those boys are adults now and are horribly obese and still eat fast food for all meals. Funny thing though the parents were naturally thin.

I don't have kids, so I'm not allowed to have opinions on this stuff. But I'd like to see others thoughts..

For 2 weeks in a row, a new mom on my Facebook has made some comments I find a bit harsh. The first one was regarding a woman in her church who was allowing her baby to gum a donut. She remarked that it was poor parenting.

Another comment she made was her stating how unhappy she was with the daycare staff for giving her child Fruit Loops as a snack.

As a child, I probably consumed a metric ton of dirt by the time I was 4. Then I graduated up to Elmers glue, crayons, and coins. Somehow I've managed to live to see my 30s. I just don't think a bit of junk food is gonna affect a kid that much. It's that day to day eating that isnt healthy. I see too many parents who give a kid a bag of mcnuggets just to get them to shut up. Every day.

When I was growing up, fast food, and restaurants in general was not common. McDonald's was what we got if mom was sick. Pizza was allowed for birthdays. On family vacations, we got treated to restaurants.

But, 355 days of the year, we got what mom cooked. My mom was/is a terrible cook, but it...

A) Was healthy.

B) Was better than nothing.

C) Was WAY better than getting the belt and sent to my room with nothing.

Maybe if people sat down and ate dinner at home more, there wouldn't be much talk about what's bad vs. good on the fast food kids menus?

Anyhow, in response to the topic...
When I was a kid, my parents had religious disagreements, let's just say.
My dad used to bribe me with McDonald's every week so I wouldn't go to religious activities with my mum.
Being seven or eight, the tactic worked perfectly for him.

Nowadays, I don't eat much junk food, and my dad gave up because he eventually realised I could make decisions for myself

While that's a bit ridiculous that she was upset, I admit, I like to have a choice, my kids eat healthy but every now and then, we like to have some junk food. I think the problem is not knowing how to eat it in moderation, it's not going to hurt them to have some french fries and a cheeseburger once or twice a month.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the kid should never get fast food. But my friend brings her kid EVERY DAY after school to Burger King. So I'm thinking the lack of fries in her Happy Meal would probably be a good thing, especially since she's still getting the cheeseburger and a soda. For Mom to be appalled that they offer fruit now instead of fries just sounds ridiculous to me.

Like you, I rarely got fast food growing up too. In fact, I know exactly how often I got it. It was once a year, occasionally twice, when we would drive to my Grandmother's house in Massachusetts from Maine. Never on the way down, but always on the way back, my dad would pull into McDonald's on Route 1 in Boston for a driving break and we'd get whatever we wanted. That was literally only once or twice a year. It was considered a treat. Personally I think every day is excessive, but she's a single mom and I try not to judge. But when she posted the she is "boycotting" Burger King because they replaced fries with fruit in the happy meal, that's just over the top in my opinion.
