This Makes Me Cringe...

I have read all the replies, interesting thread.

The friend on fb? Even down deep, she's shallow.

Part of the sad part is that people will post anything on fb without even thinking about how/what they sound like. Yet if you were to challenge her about objecting to healthier meals, she'd likely tell you that she cares deeply for her children and ONLY wants the best for them. And that she was just stressed out when she posted that. Yeah, right. She was ticked because the kids were whining about it?

To me, fast food is a rare indulgence in French Fries or Onion Rings. Really rare, maybe once a year. When I was a kid, it was only when we traveled on a vacation trip. I don't see any harm in the occasional indulgence, but not as a regular diet. If nothing else, it's expensive!

Laurajean, I'm with you on this one!

I find it kind of offensive that people seem to think the average American doesn't know the difference between healthy and bad for you. There will always be people who care about nutrition and ones who wont, and you can not blame marketing for that. I grew up with Ronald McDonald, Hamburgler, and Grimace. Back then McDonalds had play areas and were fun to go to. That did not mean everyone ate there all the time. Some people will eat that way and some wont, we are not all numb mindless idiots that don't know anything about nutrition.

I also take offense to people acting like if you eat fast food or give it to your children there is something wrong with you, or you are a bad parent. Like I said before moderation is the key.

and yet we have an obesity epidemic and i have dealt with many many people who did not know how to even make a nutritious meal. I have taught nutrition classes at the local women's shelter. A huge portion of people thinks that eating bacon, drinking soda, and snacking on fries every day is acceptable.

You miss my point, I am talking average everyday Americans. Some people will eat that way no matter what. Just like some people drink, smoke and do drugs even though they know it is bad for them. Most people care about what they do with their bodies.

smoking declined largely due to an increase in media coverage and advertisement (among other things) touting the dangers of cigarettes. The average american is greatly affected by advertising. whether we would like to think so or not. The advertisements are designed to get in our brains and stay in our subconscious. It is rather clever on their parts.

Well, I don't know how you would explain me being a product of the generation where all the ads were smoking, drinking and the movies mad things like doing drugs and partying seem normal, and I watched alot of ads and movies. Yet here I am not doing all that stuff? Also most of the people I know are the same, we are not a product of our environment. We are ourselves. We all have freedom of choice, and some choose wisely and some don't.
So many people blame the media, I blame ignorance.

because no things are absolute and as I pointed out, the ads influence not make people that way. just like any culture there are those who do not adhere to said culture. Also each individual family is in a sense a small culture of their own which largely affects our decisions

we are a consumer driver culture here in the US. Also when many of Americans get their information from the media, tv, internet, ads, and even schools that for some time promoted improper food choices because of pressure form certain food companies that also run these adds, it leads to ignorance of proper food choices. It is of course a complex issue with many facets and many dissenting humans due to free will, but there is no denying that adds, food culture, consumerism culture, and lack of easily available healthy choices have a huge affect on all of us.

Im willing to bet the farm her 'Boycott' lasts about as long as it takes her to drive through a small town with hungry kids that has a BK as its only fast food joint.

Kinda a lame thing to post on FB, really.

the problem is, the average american is very very easily swayed but media, commercials, and marketing. It is easier to believe that sugar cereals are healthy like the commercials apply, because it has added vitamins. If marketing makes McDonalds look like a safe and happy place for kids, a large portion of american will go there... a lot, and children will grow up thinking this food is the norm. Many of these places like McDonalds are rather predatory. They don't care about your health, they care about the dollar. They make the food addictive and lure patrons in with bright colors, toys, and flavor enhanced fatty foods.

yes you are the parent, and you may be one of the parents who actually think for themselves, (Well from your earlier posts I do think you are a parent who thinks for themselves) but unfortunately many Americans think that these places won't do anything to harm them or their children. When a culture normalizes this sort of thing, especially from childhood on, then they don't question eating the food, and buying the toys and going to those places over and over again.

McDonalds is very predatory with their toys and all the play equipment They make the fish filet and act like it's healthy. It actually is worse than a big Mac. I know they put additives in to encourage gorging as well as supplying such oversize meals at a great price. Salads are healthy until you make them taste really good by putting a ton of dressing on them. Some dressings are better than others but none are actually healthy.

I've often wondered why someone doesn't come up with a chain of restaurants that specializes in tasty low calorie low fat nutritious foods. It is possible to make food like that with the proper spices and reasonable portions. Smaller portions would be nice. I get tired of leaving half of my food on my plate or taking it home to rot in the fridge and go to the chickens. My DW and I usually split a plate, but that requires eating the same thing.

I feel the same way, other than Subway, there really aren't too many places to get fast food that isn't bad for you. I do like Chipotle, but have only gone a couple of times because they are too far away.
