This Makes Me Cringe...

McDonalds is very predatory with their toys and all the play equipment They make the fish filet and act like it's healthy. It actually is worse than a big Mac. I know they put additives in to encourage gorging as well as supplying such oversize meals at a great price. Salads are healthy until you make them taste really good by putting a ton of dressing on them. Some dressings are better than others but none are actually healthy.

I've often wondered why someone doesn't come up with a chain of restaurants that specializes in tasty low calorie low fat nutritious foods. It is possible to make food like that with the proper spices and reasonable portions. Smaller portions would be nice. I get tired of leaving half of my food on my plate or taking it home to rot in the fridge and go to the chickens. My DW and I usually split a plate, but that requires eating the same thing.

I feel the same way, other than Subway, there really aren't too many places to get fast food that isn't bad for you. I do like Chipotle, but have only gone a couple of times because they are too far away.

chi-fil-a is a fast food joint around here that has a majority of healthy options from lots of vegetable dishes to lost of baked and grilled chicken items,, fresh fruit, whole grain breads, salads, and so on. T hey have some friend food but it is in the minority.

They have kind of upped the anty with the dollar menu. What's the current stats on Americans and fat now? In the south it's at about 60% overweight and 30% obese and about 20% morbidly obese. To me that says a lot about a food problem in this country. A lot of people do know the difference between healthy and bad. There's also a lot of stuff in between (like yogurt). Everyone is going to eat something bad on occasion. When you can buy a meal that makes you full for 3 dollars at Mcd's a lot of people will do it. High school and college kids live on pizza and McDonalds. It's the only thing they can afford. Some of the girls may go in the bathroom and stick a finger down their throat afterwards because they know how bad it is for them but they still eat it.

I drive around everyday during the work week wondering what I should eat that I can afford and isn't bad for me. I usually try to make something healthy at home. Sometimes I'm just not in the mood for it though.

When I was a kid McDonalds was still a walk up and burgers were 12 cents. It was a rare treat to go there, same with DQ. Of course that was back before all the food at the grocery store was pre made and pre packaged. If you removed all the crap from a regular grocery store they would only have 2 aisles and a produce and meat section.

I'm glad they did all the anti smoking campaigns and outlawed the smoking commercials. They absolutely glorified smoking and kids were especially susceptible to it. It's a rare adult that is stupid enough to take up smoking. Drinking is quite obviously still a huge problem and ads are a big part of it. If ads didn't affect people retailers wouldn't spend billions a year on them.

As for the numb mindless idiots. If the shoe fits wear it. If not don't worry about it. If it wasn't true for a lot of people we would have much lower obesity rates.

I can't tell you how often I eat at Subway. Six inch toasted subs no mayo, meat and veggies take the top off to cut down on carbs. Water on the side, sometimes I get no sugar ice tea for a change in pace. Ok I admit I get an oatmeal cookie every once in a while.

personaly I think Jerad got a bypass.

Love Chipotle but it's hard to stay away from the sour cream for me and the burritos are 3 meals.

I wouldn't put much faith in the obesity rates. The BMI calculations are really a silly way to determine how unhealthy someone is, as you can have a healthy 6 ft 5 male weighing 215 and have a BMI of 25. I uses my brother as an example: he's the picture of health, nothing but muscles, yet he contributes to the "overweight" catagory.

I believe it's really up to parents to be more strict on what they allow their kids to eat. Granted, you can't escape the myriad of ads, but some of the blame still should be shouldered by parents. As a child, I would have been at micky d's everyday, had it not been for my mom.

I've also noticed that my generation and younger is really not into the whole "think for yourself" deal and would rather be spoon-fed how to live because it's simply easier. That comes at alot of cost, though.

I think I've already posted something about personal responsibility. It's a person's choice to go eat fast food. Sometimes I want fast food, and I'll blame myself for wanting it just because I have the "cravings" for it. Most of the time I make my own meals from scratch.
Even when I was in college - yes, I ate some Ramen noodles some days and I'm not proud of it - but I was able to scrounge up money (and save what I had) to buy good ingredients to make good food. I was making coq au vin, Indian butter chicken, salads and soups from scratch. I was busy and tired but never too tired to cook, because I knew my body depended upon the food that I put into it. How could I think clearly and do well in school if I was eating fast food or bad food all the time?
People just need to take more responsibility for their actions. The mother could just as well make her kid a hamburger and fries meal at home, avoiding all of her gripes about BK's decision to replace the fries.

If you have Netflix, and have any interest either way I recommend watching Food Inc., Food Matters, Ingredients and Diabeties the silent killer.

It's not necessarily that some people don't want to eat healthy. The sad truth is that it's too expensive for some people when there are $1 options at McDonalds etc. My goal in the next 5-10 years is to create a non profit organic CSA specifically for low income families in my area. I think EVERYONE should have the right to eat nutritious local organic produce. But that's just me.

And sorry but IMO marketing plays a HUGE role in that whole scheme. If it didn't, those companies wouldn't spend billions of dollars on it. Again just my opinion.

I don't know either. I haven't eaten fast food in years.

Neither have we. My children are fast food deprived!

I work in a school with a 95% poverty rate and I can tell you there are a lot of overweight kiddos around. I just read the original quote to my wife and she just about died laughing. This thread is great
