I found another egg today but this time...In the tin shed area were Pip has been laying off the perch. I am guessing this egg is hers. It was just there on the ground with no nest but I examined it and it isn't broken, so she is making progress. Damsel was pacing again so I will have to search for another egg tomorrow. It is going to rain tonight so I hope the egg under the plant will be okay, but that plant is good about blocking water so I think the egg is safe.
My blues lay eggs everywhere until they start to set, then they will lay in one area (different every year) I have boxes around but they won't use them. I have even put eggs I find laying around in the boxes and they are not interested in the boxes. They usually lay under the red cedars and once they atart it doesn't matter what the weather they sit until they hatch. I have had them lay next to each other for the whole time with no trouble. The birds were 3 years old before they started sitting on eggs but they would drop eggs all over the place before then. I let the birds set/hatch and raise the babies. Hope you have luck this year.
Recently I have been noticing some plants near the pen look like they have been pushed down like laid on or something...Today I found one of the fake eggs out of the nest box, and 10 ft. away on the ground in the pen. Then in the big metal water container that the peafowl sometimes get in to cool off, there were two broken eggs, but no yolk!? Surely if one of the peahens decided to lay eggs in the water they wouldn't break in half like that right? We are thinking a raccoon might be coming into the pen. I have seen scat in the pen that didn't look like it came from my peafowl, and smelled different but my parents dismissed it. We could have a raccoon or a opossum coming into the pen at night and eating the eggs before morning so I can't get them.
We set out two traps outside the pen with apple slices and chicken eggs as bait. I am not sure if I hope we can find out what is doing this. No wonder why I haven't been getting eggs lately.
Edit: Oh the two eggs I am incubating will be candled this Saturday...I really hope they are good. At least I will know now what a good one looks like since I have seen my share of bad eggs now lol.
the first 3 me an little blue put in the bator got skrewed up i walked buy it about 10 days after they went in an i noticed i put to long of a tray in for the pea eggs an they were not turning we candled an they look clear
but she will not let me throw them out they go into lock down on tuesday an she wants to see what happens she has 4 more in there now an 3 more going in tomorrow.i would guess a racoon for you aswell there pop stinks an they like to use water to eat there food.keep us updated on your traping an be careful racoons can be nasty animals
There wasn't anything in the two traps this mooring, but we had a good rain today and dad said if we are going to catch anything we should catch it tonight. Ice was acting like she might lay an egg, so I hope that she chooses the dog box again. We have fresh straw in their so hopefully she won't think it is a bad place for a nest since the incident with the egg breaking.
We thought we had racoons eating are chicken eggs so we put eggs in the trap and every time there would be a SKUNK! Then we would put meat and there would be a racoon in the trap. So I think you may be dealing with a skunk!
