Those who need help in sexing peafowl

So let's summarize. The author starts a thread on helping sex peafowl. The author is unknown to the regular crowd. The author gets a couple of responses from some folks who have hatched hundreds of peafowl (this year). The comments are generally blown off. Then lo and behold the author has mis-sexed their own bird. The thread then goes back and forth between incorrect information based on almost zero experience and helpful information and examples from vast experience and time proven methods all while maintaining a sense of decorum and humor until post #289.

Your right, as I already stated 23 pages on an obvious peahen is kind of crazy.

Thank you, AuguredIn. A very sensible summary.
Hope you all have a lovely holiday!

I did actually learn something about my own birds (and about other colors) from this thread and that was that hens and cocks have different neck feathers. Always thought they looked different, but never gave it much thought until I saw the picture of one. Sure was a silly thread, but it did make me laugh.

Merry Christmas to all!

Neither did I. I never knew there was a difference other than color, except birds with white coloring. This thread taught me that. Merry Christmas!!! Give love to your family and animals.

Today I was working with Thor and I realized something he now has a white band and the bottom of his neck that goes all the way around and the front part of his neck is loosing color, it's turning white. Also there's barring developing I promise. I'm going to get a picture when it's a little later because if I take it now I'm getting the sun throwing my camera off making everything yellow or white. I zoomed in on the photos and looked at the neck feathers they look like an adult male neck feather. I have a few neck feathers from Colbolt and held it next to his neck feathers and they look similar. Thor and Calypso's neck and breast feather shape are completely different. Thor's wing feathers not the primaries and not the secondary feathers the ones in between that are barred like this

They are turning black just as you said they would for males Zaz! I will get more photos to back up what I'm saying. I promise Thor is a male. Not trying to get the argument going again.

Connerhills, had time to glance thru this and noticed your post waay back on page 9? post#89,,,within my Black Shoulder Silver Pied breeding pen I have Roadtrip,an easily visual 100% Black Shoulder Silver Pied male. His outside lacing on the feathers on top of his back, right behind his neck are all outlined in silver.I have 2 bssp hens in this pen.I also have a dark pied, and a silver pied,,and one silver pied split to black shoulder hens. These last 2 hens are notcably diffrent in color but are very close to Roadtrips silver lacing across the top of his back.
This being my 3rd year hatching them, sexing them is also becoming a lot easier a lot sooner too. They used to be just a guess but not anymore.

I don't know if clicking to enlarge these will show the silver coloring behind his neck but I do have a Beeeyooteeful coming 3 year old BSSP Male, out of Roadtrip here that has a complete pigmented train, with 100% white eyes now really starting to show up well. His silver lacing is also becoming more and more evident as each day passes.I was considering selling this coming 3 yr old BSSP male, along with a bssp, and 2 purple bssp hens, but after watching this male open up with what train he now has,he's a heartstopper for sure. This past season his train was just as ugly as Thang,,but what a diffrence 4 months makes when growing his first full length one! He's definately going to be a "Loud Pied"

He's blue and you can see that the feathers split at the end.

They are splitting just as an adult male. Best view with this photo.

The barring is developing. I know it's a terrible angle but you can see there's less barring it's starting to go black in between the primary and shoulder feathers. Calypso wouldn't move.

Feathers are split apart like adult male. He's loosing color on the breast, use to be able to see that every feather had a black spot like a female but now he's going white. I didn't realize that the breast and neck feathers were like this until I zoomed in when you guys told me the neck feathers is another way to sex peafowl. Also when I started putting my camera closer to his neck and breast. I know it's some of the breast and neck photos are a little blurry because I'm to close or Thor's moving. It can be hard seeing it on some feathers because of the black spots but I can assure you they look just like an adult male. He's turning white I'm surprised that he was going color and then started going white. Don't know why but he is.

Maybe on this topic is needed ... a Blue Beret?
