That foot problem is what killed that IB peachick I hatched out. It's the cause of lack of protein. You have to bump the protein way up and then work with the toes and then lower the protein slowly. This may cause him to loose all of those train feathers.

Okay. The picture is 2 years old and while the toe may look messed up, it is not. I assure you it is fine, and the bird is happy and healthy.

His foot is in the air, you can not possibly tell if it is messed up from this perspective.
There are a few reasons why a pea may have bent toes and being double jointed is one of them.

You could have fixed that chicks toes easily with a pair of "chick shoes" I have had several hatch with crooked and curled toes and the shoes have worked every time. That aside, whatever killed the chick probably had nothing to do with the toes, 2 separate issues would be my guess.

Probably not the right nutrition and since she walked on her toes it might have got infected. I never even heard of those chick shoes. My aunt who is a vet said that is probably why the toes were deformed because of the lack of protein. She's seen it in just about every bird chick that comes into the clinic.

Did you hatch the chick yourself? If so, how long between pip and actual hatching? My understanding of crooked or curled toes is that it is usually a result of the bones in the feet starting to harden before the chick is able to get out of the egg. Their bones remain soft until they pip and begin to breathe oxygen, at that time bones will start to harden, they are so packed into that egg, if they don't get out quick enough the bones in the toes will start to harden in the position they are in while inside the egg. Chick shoes are something you make yourself as needed, usually each chick has different needs, they are basically just a brace that you tape the straightened toes onto. I make mine from paper clips, pipe cleaners will work as well. usually 1-3 days in the shoes will straighten the toes right out. If you ever need to make a pair I would be more than happy to send you pics showing how.

I use masking tape and tape their toes top and bottom. Just did a little duckling last week. I've never heard of curly toe killing a chick, that was probably something else like a yolk sac infection.
