Those who need help in sexing peafowl

I use masking tape and tape their toes top and bottom. Just did a little duckling last week. I've never heard of curly toe killing a chick, that was probably something else like a yolk sac infection.

If I can get away with just tape I will do that, but I've had a few instances where something stronger was needed. Last summer it was a little BS, the toes just wanted to curl back up so bad that they would work their way loose inside the tape. I had to use the paper clips and tape the toes to them to keep them straight. Took about 2 days and they were fine. Agreed that the toes didn't kill the chick, sometimes there's just no way to tell what did. Mindy

Just lost two ducklings, including the one with the curled toes, necropsy confirmed yolk sac infection, most likely e. Coli, but won't know until cultures are done. Gotta love free poultry necropsies in CA!

Would love to see some pictures of you chick shoes if you have any...

Did you hatch the chick yourself? If so, how long between pip and actual hatching? My understanding of crooked or curled toes is that it is usually a result of the bones in the feet starting to harden before the chick is able to get out of the egg. Their bones remain soft until they pip and begin to breathe oxygen, at that time bones will start to harden, they are so packed into that egg, if they don't get out quick enough the bones in the toes will start to harden in the position they are in while inside the egg. Chick shoes are something you make yourself as needed, usually each chick has different needs, they are basically just a brace that you tape the straightened toes onto. I make mine from paper clips, pipe cleaners will work as well. usually 1-3 days in the shoes will straighten the toes right out. If you ever need to make a pair I would be more than happy to send you pics showing how.

I'd love to see a pic of the Chick Shoes. I've never seen Chick Shoes before.

Yep I took 5 eggs from Jadea. That was her first year laying. The chick hatched out in 16 hours. Though I found it very odd that she hatched out with only 24 days of incubation after being layed. I was feeding my peafowl 18% protein which is way to low. The person I got Thor from told me they thought 18% protein was good enough for peachicks but every peachick would die and they all had curled toes then they started using the medicated game bird feed I now have and they don't get any crooked toes and every chick they hatch didn't die from something you can't see. They've had chicks though die from freezing and from raccoons.

There are several people here that have some experience and theories on curled toe and splay leg, I think @frenchblackcopper and @AugeredIn have posted about it before. I'm sure other have, too, but for some reason those names were the first to pop into my head.

How old was your chick when it died?
