Those who need help in sexing peafowl

Well for now I still think Thor is a male, as I have from the very beginning. But as I've said before, I don't care whether or not Thor is truly a male or female. I will still love him no matter what.

But I can honestly say I've seen quite a few pics of peahens that look similar to Thor. But, for now, I will still say he is a male and hope for the best.

All of you have given very clear factors that make lots of sense. (And this comes from me, who didn't know a thing about Peafowl before this past year. Besides the fact that "peacock" was the only thing I knew. I honestly just called all peafowl "peacocks" before beginning this journey into Peafowl World.)

If my friend Birdrain is indeed wrong about Thor, I will know to trust you all a lot more and won't be afraid to say I was wrong to believe Birdrain. And I thank you all for this thread and all the other ones on here that have actually taught me LOTS about peafowl these past few months I've been exploring. So I thank you greatly for the new knowledge you've granted me and I apologize for my doubt in advance if you all end up being the correct ones.

And to make it very clear, no Zaz, I'm not brainwashed...

Oh, and I love all your funny pics!!! They're awesome & amazing!! Good work!
Seriously? Not trying to be rude, but you two are the only ones that think so. You seem like a smart young lady, so I just assumed that you could tell Thor is a hen.

did you read the other sections?
"they lay small eggs and lay maybe every other day or sometimes only 5 days a week". (my bantam cochins lay every day and all winter lol.)

"Easiest method that works for all breeds of ducks is the male will have a drake feather if it's a drake. When there is no drake feather than it's a hen. Most ducks the hen will have a dark coloring like a forest green on the bill while the drake might be a darker color but not green."

"Flying is a dominant trait, so if you get ducklings that one of the parents is a duck that can fly then the babies will probably be able to fly."

"When Incubating you can get eggs that were layed on different days to hatch on the same day by adjusting the heat to each egg."

"All ducks must be in water to breed but the Indian Runner can breed without water." (my ducks didn't get this memo

)

"How chickens were domesticated was just adding more hours of light to make them think it was summer all year making them lay all year"

I never even read the other sections. I've had Peafowl for about 19 years now, but I do not know much about chickens or ducks, and unlike some people I am willing to admit that I do not know much! If the other sections are as full of misinformation as the peafowl section, I can only imagine! Oh the shame

lol. even people with no knowledge of other poultry could see the holes and bull in the information.

That is true. But it's also true that everything Birdrain says he can see on Thor(a) is indeed there as I too can see them. I'm not 100% "Thor is definitely a male and nothing can change my mind" because as I said last time, I have seen pictures of peahens that look quite similar to Thor. So I'm for sure not 100% on that.

Everything that's posted on the "Thor is a female & named Thora" side definitely makes sense to me and I will agree with you guys on some of things you have pointed out on Thor(a). I just started learning about peafowl quite recently and I will say, again, this and all the threads about peafowl have been very helpful to my learning and I love all the new info I've learned about them.

You are right. Thor does indeed look like he has many qualities that match a Peahen's quality. But Birdrain's points for male qualities also appear to be there (at least to me it does) whether or not you guys can agree (and you definitely don't have to).

So, again, I'm really sorry you feel that way about me. When this is over, I hope you can forgive me and my actions during this time. I'm not here to make an enemy out of all of you. I'd actually like to be friends with you if you'd allow me too. And I come to this site with the eagerness to learn more about the fascinating Poultry and everyone on here has contributed greatly. And I do indeed look forward to seeing all the Peafowl websites in the making.

I have never considered you an "enemy", I think that is being a bit melodramatic, this is afterall a poultry forum not a battlefield.

I do not think that anyone else on here considers you an enemy either. You have done nothing that requires forgiveness. You are entitled to your own opinion as is everyone. When someone such as yourself comes to a forum like this with a sincere desire to learn, it is obvious and it is to be respected, because you are trying to better yourself by increasing your knowledge, and that is what this forum is here for. So Kudos to you. I also respect that you support your friend, I hope he realizes how lucky he is. I do not think that anyone on here considers Birdrain an enemy either, at least I know I do not. However there are very basic differences between the two of you. The most obvious being that he is not here because he wants to learn. He wants to "KNOW" without having to spend the time it takes to learn and he wants to convince everyone else that he "KNOWS". I'm sorry, but you just do not create your own website and then fill it with misinformation, hearsay, opinions, and so on then claim they are facts, if your interest is in learning. Some of those errors are so basic that double checking with just one other source would have shown them as incorrect. But someone who "Knows" has no reason to double check his facts, only someone who wants to learn needs to do that. The bottom line is that your questions and desire to learn have earned you respect, while his incorrect statements and claims at knowledge have cost him respect. IMO

Could you post those photos of these said peahens, i would like to see them.

I have some peahens with blue neck feathers, some with barred feathers and a few with the burnt orange feathers, but like Thor, they are *very* clearly hens.

By flying I'm saying like migrating not chicken flying by going so high up and then flying down. I consider flying when the bird would be able to be in the air for more then a few miles like a mallard. The Black Indian Runners I had the drake died but the hen flew away how I know this because a black duck in the air with a bunch of mallards sticks out of the crowd. Her mother was a black Indian Runner and the father was a mallard. Well the bantams that I have and at Dunlap Hatchery only lay every other day. Might have to deal with the age because my bantam pullets layed every day until they were a year old and Dunlap they just have all their hens running together of all ages so have fun trying to tell who is old and who is youngest. Not saying hens will just stop laying in the winter. I record my egg production and during the winter my hens laying goes down by half. I go from 8 eggs a day, to 2 to 4 eggs a day. If I add a lamp and to "extend" the day light then the egg production goes up. When the day gets shorter gand you don't add artificial light geuss what happens to egg production it goes down. Everybody knows that unless the chicken was breed specifically to lay in the winter. Ever heard of an eclipse molt. That's why some drakes will start to look like a hen instead of a drake when it's not breeding season. My drake looses the drake feather in the winter because he's not going to breed.
