Thoughts on Dry Hatch & Oh Yea They're Hatching!! Pics added

7 out and 1 more zipping and none sticky! The first one hatched is really big! and having trouble keeping her balance but appears really healthy otherwise. Haven't had a chance to look her over yet so we'll see. I finally had to cave last nite and get some sleep. #4 was out before I quit watching and all seemed well.

19hbelgian you don't forget humidity. There's a big write up on dry hatch somewhere on here. Don't have time to find it right now tho. For me I wanted to keep it around 30 but with the genesis 1588 it wanted to be either 20 with no water or 40-50 when I added a Tbsp or 2 of water. So I kinda split the difference and also watched the air sac really closely and if it seemed to get too big too fast I'd add a bit of water and if it slowed too much I wouldn't add for a couple days. Like silkiechicken says she just watches the rate of air cell growth. I'm thinkin this is the big indicator. I was thinking of drilling a second hole in my 1588 to maybe help regulate humidity a little more (I have spare plugs). In my LG humidity always would be around 30 for incubation and mid 60's for hatch and I had better hatches in that as long as I could keep the temp stabilized so thats what I aimed for for this hatch and it seems to have worked beautifully!

Mahonri A humidity pump? Never heard of that. Now that would be the ultimate incubator if you could incorporate something like that into the 1588 cuz I never have any temp worries with this incubator. Just humidity.

rustyswoman aren't the blrw fun!! glad you're enjoying them. Mine are excellent free rangers and when I trade off breeds to free range I always feel bad for them cuz they seem to love it so! Hows the LS coming along?

Hi Jane, So fantastic!!!!

It is amazing what a dry hatch can do for those chickies. We have 12 Light Sussex that are ready for lockdown on 12/21--next Monday!!

Gosh how the time goes by fast! I am really, really impressed with your fertility and shipping. Never have I had such good ratios on shipped eggs.

Are you having any issues with the cartons? How many have pipped altogether? Last question: has your humidity fluctuated much during the hatch or is it staying around 65 still?

Mahonri, ohhhh I would love one of those incubators.

I think 30 should be perfect. You have to post you know on how your hatch goes too!

( I love those smilies)

to whoever asked, I'm on day 12 today. Down to 34 today (does a little happy dance!) and temp still at 100. When I candeled a few last night air sac seemed a touch small for day 12 so I am going to let it go until 25-30 then add a little bit. I think I am going to aim for 65 during hatch. doesn't it fluctuate at all with the chicks hatching? And I think I am def going to do the cartons. I am so excited esp after hearing all the dry hatch success stories! 19hbelgian, aren't you in PA? I would think you would be fine to try dry hatch as long as it doesnt get too low.
Jane, how many did you set again?

I'm going to attempt a dry hatch with this next batch but would like to keep an eye on the air sack to determine if I'm going too high or too low with my humidity, does anyone have an illustration of how large the air sacks /should/ be? Especially with small bantam eggs?

Thanks for posting that sangel. Looks pretty close to what Id been looking at. It increases pretty rapidly between day 14 & day 18 doesn't it!

I set 12 eggs. 7 are out and looking good 2 are pretty well zipped and should pop out any minute. 1 more has pipped. 2 with nothing yet. I'm setting up the brooder and then off to the dentist. Ugh!

I haven't been able to tell my humidity during this hatch cuz the first chick out tipped my hygrometer over and its been face down ever since! Was holding steady at 64 going into the hatch and I imagine goes up as chicks hatch and dry. I have kept the plug in throughout the hatch tho.

The cartons have been great! I think the later chicks don't get banged around and its easier for them to stay oriented to zip and maybe don't spend so much energy having to reorient.

Pics coming soon I promise!

ok so now that I posted that pic, LOL I decided to finally go ahead and candle all 15 of my eggs...they're on day 12 and all 15 are fertilized, growing, and moving well. I'm going to post some pics and you all can tell me how the air cell looks. I think it looks a little small for 12 days but that might just be me worrying. you all give me your opinions. I got some good video footage of movement too, anyone know how to post videos?
