Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

Thanks for the interesting responses to my chicken vs duck egg question! I have only eaten chicken eggs, but I do not want to own chickens. I HOPE I like duck eggs since I should have plenty later this year with the little flock I am hatching. I can't wait to try them!

Quail eggs, eh? What makes them so good?

If a bird carries the color gene but does not express it, they known as splits. However you would never know unless you breed them a bird of the color bird A is split for or another bird split for the same color as A. Then not all of the off spring will be of the recessive color, some will still be split, some will be of the color and some will be just (let's say) black. Out of those, you can hatch 70-100 chicks and keep maybe 2 that meet SOP and start your breeding flock.

There are currently loads of Marans, but few and far between meet the SOP, and many have thumb print combs, sprigs or carnation combs all are something you use for needing. Many more have clean legs, again not something you breed with.

Orps are the same way, lots of project colors going on, but you have to be willing to hatch and cull heavily those that aren't of size or good feathering. You also need blacks to cross lav project birds back to. So now you are talking maintaining two flocks of high quality breeding stock, sometimes 3 or more even.

This just begins to explain the cost of the project color chicks and eggs to some degree. Plus if there is imported blood in the breeding you add that expense to the price as well.
