If a bird carries the color gene but does not express it, they known as splits. However you would never know unless you breed them a bird of the color bird A is split for or another bird split for the same color as A. Then not all of the off spring will be of the recessive color, some will still be split, some will be of the color and some will be just (let's say) black. Out of those, you can hatch 70-100 chicks and keep maybe 2 that meet SOP and start your breeding flock.

There are currently loads of Marans, but few and far between meet the SOP, and many have thumb print combs, sprigs or carnation combs all are something you use for needing. Many more have clean legs, again not something you breed with.

Orps are the same way, lots of project colors going on, but you have to be willing to hatch and cull heavily those that aren't of size or good feathering. You also need blacks to cross lav project birds back to. So now you are talking maintaining two flocks of high quality breeding stock, sometimes 3 or more even.

This just begins to explain the cost of the project color chicks and eggs to some degree. Plus if there is imported blood in the breeding you add that expense to the price as well.

I'm cool with that.

When you say "cull" ... can I just sell them and not kill them? (Say.. yes..)

Oh wait, I can just eat them.

OH duh... forgot to tell you peeps.. I've got 2 Light Sussex that have internally pipped. And my Blue laced reds are looking funny. I'm candling tonight when it's dark.

It looks like the air cell and sloped to the side (in a bad way) and like they are sunk to the bottom.. Does that make sense?

We'll see.

CG- Those eggs are pretty. My daughter smashed mine when I forgot to put them up. I need to remember to blow some out before my girl goes to QJ's house, it's going to be awhile before I get more duck eggs. Need some for Easter, lol.
I forgot to tell you all I heard from CR on fb, she's ok, the meds are what's keeping her off the comp.

Cull pertains to removing the bird from the breeding program, and not selling it in such a way to make another think they now have a breedable bird.

Culling here usually ends a roosters life, and selling the cull hens to egg laying only flocks. Sometimes cull hens go into our egg laying flock for selling eggs.
