Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

SM - I think the one on the bottem may make it. The one on top looks like its got further to go....but sometimes they just make it anyway if left to do what they need, and theres no serious infection risk.

Can you put them on a clean plastic plate, to keep them away from germs that may allready be present on your screen?

Question:

Your sinus infection, I get them alot... SO, if one of your bators had bad bacteria, or even worse, high temp tolerant molds or something, that could be why you HAVE a sinus infection, and also why your babies had a hard time. Seems clear your doing ok incubating, they were mostly formed, so not just a temp or humidity issue I think.

clean that incubator. I've held my duck eggs up to 10 days and still got above 50% hatches, so maybe yours can wait another day. I would definately use bleach water, but do rinse it off, because bleach on the egg shells could injure the preganant eggs.

My incubators were both cleaned very well with bleach water before I set any of my eggs. Now I have to wait for the 2 babies that are in there to make it, dry off and then get them out of there and disinfect that incubator. Clean clean clean.

SM- That is a lot of blood and yolk, I think they had another day or 2 until hatch so that's probably how long it's going to take them to perk up if they do. Since they don't have their shells I'd take a wet paper towel and wrap it around them to help them absorb some of the yolk and keep them from rupturing it. Maybe put them each in a margarine tub or something to keep them from dragging it or picking at someone elses. Hopefully celtic comes on soon to help you. Good luck, I hope they make it for you.

yes. This is just what I was going to say. They aren't ready to be out yet. The margarine tub is an excellent idea. Keep them from moving and keeping their legs close to their bodies so they can move them.

They were going to die even if I didn't help them because they were pretty well shrunk wrapped in there. I just lost another one. The one left is free from its shell but has a huge umbelical cord fullof yolk. Its going to die too. I give up

Ok, this is an easy fix. When you have to interfere: As long as they have air, Like if they've pipped and are sitting there. I don't help them for about 24 hours. But I keep the membrane moist with a q-tip or drops of water off my finger.

At 24 to 36 hours I peel back the shell, but I do it in a way that they can get out themselves. Like.. I focus on the head area so I can get a good peep at the yolk sac. If it's still there I leave them. They aren't supposed to come out until that yolk is gone, so it's okay for them to sit in there, as long as they can breathe.

It takes about 3 days for me to "help" a chick out. Unless it's sac is gone, like these 2 last night.

This is how I do things! Others do things different... that's fine.

SM, so so sorry. Don't give up, let's go over your set up and what you do from day one forward. Give me all the details from brand of bator, still air or forced air, temps and humidity. I have 2 incubators,
forced air Hovabor that I use to incubate, temps at 99.5, humidity around 60-65%
and a still air LG that I use to hatch in, temps at 100.1, humidity around 75-80%

Have you ever calibrated your thermometer and hydrometer? If not there is a starting point as they aren't ever really accurate out of the box. They need checked again each year before you set eggs in the spring. I use an Accurite combo thermo/hydrometer. I also have a combo thermo/hydrometer made by Incubator Warehouse. I also have 2 thermos that came with the incubators. they have all them tested against each other and with one that I use for indoor/outdoor use.

We run a digital version that plugs into a mini laptop via USB to read and record info. But we also have two back ups also to cross check.

Marty... Thank you. Hubby is medical corp in the Air Force and I am a veterinary back ground so I tend to be a stickler for set up, care, cleaning and handling. After all we are only as good as your system and set up.

I don't know what else I can do or what I am doing wrong. When I started getting this sinus infection, I even wore a mask and wore gloves when I handled the eggs so that I would not carry anything to them.
