Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

Ok, here's my candling news! Out of 15 duck eggs, 4 candled clear, 10 are veining well and one is veining but not as well as the others. The five chicken eggs are all brown eggs and I can see... something... but not enough to tell anything. Guess they will be getting the sniff test rather than candling. Does anyone have tips on how to discern anything when candling brown eggs?

Well, I think I've worked out how to download pics....

Heres a pic of one of my jumbo courtenix quail eggs next to a hen egg. (Ducks eggs range so much more in size, I figured this would make it easier to visualize)

Just for fun.....

Not easy to candle them....I'll try the LED tonight!

Wow, that is the darkest quail egg I've ever seen.

That is GREAT news on your duck eggs!!! As for brown eggs, use a stronger flashlight and make sure you are in pitch dark room when you candle.

I live in a historic home too! We bought a house built in 1918, and originally the Barn was a Fish Hatchery, & our home we currently live in, the upstairs were the caretakers quarters, & the downstairs was the office/business side. I had one room with 3 doors going into it... Now my sons bedroom! All the doors have skeleton keys and old style door knobs, and upstairs the attic has troll doors, the length of the house on both sides. DEFINITELY a project, but has so much character

I call it "fascinated with old architecture." I was all about buying a 1910 home when we were looking to move out here. Someone swooped in and bought it right before we could go see it. Now we're in a 1973 house, but the 22 acres across the road is vacant, so it feels like we live out in the woods. My bosses are telling me to thank my lucky stars we didn't get that old farmhouse. Theirs is a 1901 and it's a money pit (their opinion).

Small world, huh? GC and I were talking about my place. It was built in 1876.

If you'll send me a PM link to yours, I'll send one to mine. SInce it lists the address, I'm a little relectant to just make it public knowlege....

However, I guess we could just bite the bullet and attach a link to the historic website page. Mines in Kansas, where is yours?

Agreed. And there's always something to discover. Like when you remodel you find old newspapers as insulation or wheat pennies.. Just cool.

We found boxes of shaving cream (you know the ones in the old metal tube) A jar of Marbles, old Circus Flyers.... Dead mice, and one mummified rat THAT my sone took to show & tell

& lots of other things !

Found a painting of an angel over a crib w/a baby, 3 ladies fashing mags from 1876, 12 gold coins in a wall, and since the people had a lumberyard and Livery stable, all kinds of horse stuff is in the original 19th cent. barn.

That dead rat to show and tale is pretty funny! Wonder what the kids all thought! LOL
