Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

Do you have it on a timer? Sounds like an easy addition compared to the other work we have cut out for us. It's going to be another spring full of heavy work.

Last spring we had to re-do the entire front yard because the county made us put our new drainfield out there. Then we built the duck house, pen and secondary run. This coming spring it's going to be fixing our problems with the duck enclosure and building two hoophouses. I'd like to go a year without heavy projects, but life just doesn't work that way...

We don't use a timer. When we go shut up the ducks, we turn it on. When we let them out and feed them, the light goes off. If the light goes out in the night, Man you should listen to the disgruntled quacking! They think the light is Mama, since I use brooder lights too!!!

Go eat a cupcake, that'll help! LOL

i love to bake, but don't eat sweets

maybe a cup of hot tea

My last laying batch of ducks (not the wee ones) were hatched last summer. They started laying in late December (the Khakis lay at 6 mths, a month before the Pekings) DH just got the first Peking eggs on My daughters B-day, Feb 7. There was snow both before, and after. We have to dash out at the crack of dawn to gather eggs before they freeze, and keep checking from 5 am until 7:45, just before we leave in the morning Your duck should be on it, if lights not the issue. Maybe shes overrun, if its her and a heard of inappropriate young drakes.... They are quite opportunistic, if you follow me.

I don't know how good a layer black swedish are. Remember, my ducks are selected for eggability, and new males are purchased out of great egg layers, so thats what im all about here. We very seldom dine on duck, just quiche, french toast, omelets, and etc. Love my duckies

the pekins i know are males and i have one of each of the black swedish (yes she is very loud compared to the others) hmmm... that is strange i was told they probably wouldn't lay till their first spring? maybe she is laying and just hiding them but i can't imagine where and she definatly isn't sitting on them

Good that its safe for them. We have canine troubles here, so they MUST be locked up. When we move youngsters to the pens, we always have to heard them in just before dark. After a few weeks, I just go turn on the light and leave, then come back pen by pen and just shut the doors. Like I said, they think the light is Mama, and are happy to go to Mama most of the time.

also my ducks refuse to be shut in for the night so it makes it imposible to give them light, they are stubborn feather butts

i would probably say that if i weren't convinced my pekin males were only interested in each other, i have never seen them do anything but lay next to her and make sure the rooster doesn't try something fresh or eat her food

i am kinda at a loss a guess they are just cute little duds

I don't play music just for them, however psychologically, most hearing creatures will continue to respond to the type of music they heard neonatally....ex. Play your favorite song to them often, and then when they are young, keep playing that stuff, and they will relax instead of freak on you in the brooder.

Of course, knowing ducks, one will inevitably try to sing along. I'm telling you, my Lucky answers my questions. No idea what shes saying, but she talks back more than my 12 year old!!

Play the music. You aren't carzy, I think you are charming!

Well, time for me to log off for the night.

But before I go, I have to ask...

Who here plays music for their eggs while they're in the bator? Am I crazy?

Put her and her male buddy togahter, away from the other ducks if you can. Maybe a nice honeymoon will fetch some babies for you....
