Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

Do you wash the eggs before using for food? and if so with what?

It was never a problem with my chicken eggs, but somehow the ducks manage to soil their eggs really well.

OKAY ! I was watching Doomsday Preppers.... I saw a lady saying if you coat an egg in mineral oil, put it in a carton, then store in a cool dark place they can last for over 12 months!

Hi Marty. Its been rough but I am ok, I think. I have both incubators full and am expecting to go on lockdown Wednesday for my silkie chickens. I have some Cayuga and SA eggs in there too that aren't due till next week, so I may have to open fast and turn the duck eggs.

I am happy you are Cheery

Sorry for the delayed info, DG! I've had to catch up like 3 times today. (Its a lot of reading!)

Thaks for your kind thoughts on my poor Lady.

To cheer myself up, I finally used my new candler (No comment there, Jazz! Resit, resist

)

My e-bay turkey eggs (ordered 6, got 7) 4 are coming on nicely, but one of them is in the wrong end (sigh) It sometimes works out, and hopefull it will for this one too. I've never candled so soon before. Its just in time, since I've got 12 Giant Pekings eggs coming (hope they fit) and another batch of white quial. I need room in my incubator. maybe I can figure out how to make the candler do quial eggs, they are just a bit too small for it. (always something, isn't it?)

Jazz- I have only Jumbo corturnix, but the new layers seem to lay smaller eggs, like pullets do. They usually hatch ok, but it makes for variety when breeding groups are always in transition somewhat. If I don't hatch and add newbies, they all get about the same size, more or less.

I think I'm going to be handturning the new duck eggs. They are supposed to be almost twice the size of normal duck eggs, so they probobly won't fit in my turner. I go on lockdown with the baby quail friday. I'm supposed to be getting more quail eggs, and I may have to wait until friday to put them in. No room at the inn, and the eggs both expected on Wednesday.

hmmmm. well I don't think I am brave enough to try that. although store bought ones seem to last forever.
