Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

If its mostly there, just keep his tummy moist, while he finishes up his hatch business.

Ok, one moment. Getting you pics now!
I noticed that he has yolk to absorb yet

will he be ok? Not sure how much yolk. Maybe thats why he looks like hes sleeping... Maybe he wasnt completly ready?.... Crap...

I wouldn't give up yet. I read in one of my chicken books about the little sling/yogurt cup method to fix a leg. It doesn't fix it in a day or two. I'll find that book tonight and read that part again to refresh my memory of what exactly it said.

Well, Pocket still can't stand. Hubby changed her "brace" while I was at work. I hate to say it, but I'm starting to give up on this one. I adore the little peeper, but if it's not meant to live, I wish it would hurry up and say goodbye. I don't want to cull a bird with so much will to live.

Don't do it yet! Remember, I've hatched oodles of baby ducks, and I've had this too. Mostly with my pekings. Many, at least 7 of 10, get over this in a week or two. Don't give up on her yet. Sometimes it just takes time to get over how your legs got stuck in the egg during development.

I won't. But I'm just feeling bad about it. If I hadn't pipped the egg and basically hatched little Pocket by hand, she would have died in the egg. I feel like I'm getting karma for interfering with nature.

My boss gave me the "why don't you cull those lame ducks/chicks right away" talk again today. I just told her that I'm not a commercial farmer and these are my pets. I wouldn't knowingly sell a lame duck to someone, but I'm not so willing to give up so quickly either.

Time for me to go hug my Pocket duck again.

OK, we have the first one out! When he kicked out of the shell, out came some yellow/greenish glop. I am hoping that this is just regular egg fluid, and not unabsorbed yolk. However, he was pushing and kicking to get out...

How long til we move to the brooder? 30 minutes? an hour? longer?

Cute! I wait until there are two. If your on lockdown, though, its best to just leave them in and alone until everyone has had a turn. You crap out your humidiy, and hatch time is over.

He'll be ok up to 72 hours w/o food or water. I'd at least let him dry up,.
Well, we have at least 5 others that are going to require assistance because of wrong way pipping. Of course, we have to open the bator to do this...
We are also heading into day 29...how long will the wrong way ducks be ok in their shell without assistance as long as they have air?

If your that far in, I'd peep hole them soon. Just a tiny hole for air, and to buy them a bit more time.

Try to keep your room super humid, so you don't crash your humidity. Don't want the babies to shrink wrap too.
