Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

Ok, let's see if I can remember everything..

Julie: How hard was it to get the pee pee to come out? I'm serious. I really want to figure this vent sexing out. Right now I think I'm too careful not to hurt them.

SM: I'm just super excited about your Sebbie egg!!

Um... Oh- Poor little Pocket. What a sweetie. I bet swimming really helps that.

Gosh there was something else..

I'm getting ready to snap a few pics of my girls/boys. I haven't done that in awhile.

Morning all.

Julie, those are great to seed with too. Love clover and it goes so far too! It burns up down here so is only a winter cover crop. Pumpkin, watermelon, peas, carrots all work too. Apple trees are a great addition for goose keepers too. We have added 3 this year that grow well in our heat in hopes to offer the fruit to the geese.

Cute new hatchling pictures all. We have another Sebbie hatched,an African gosling, and 5 Toulouse externally pipped. 2 more African heading to lockdown, 3 more Sebbie. Oh and buttload of ducks too.

We picked up a new 6 month old goat to keep our withered fainting goat company. She is all white with black leg markings. Very sweet little girl, still very shy still right now.

We have a pear and 2 apple trees in our yard. Nothing touched them last year, but I'll throw some in for the geese if they like them. We have persimmons too, and the ducks ate some but most just sat on the ground for me to squish. Nothing grew in their yard last year pretty much at all, so last fall I had hubby trim a bunch of the tree canopy over head and I tilled it hoping something will this year.

lockdown is this weekend.
still havent gotten my humidity down to enlarge air cells. tried opening vents and that didnt work.
so what can i do? just hope for the best?
ill check them again when i get home but i dont think they have changed.
they should start dropping anytime now to.
these babies have my humidity ridin high lately.
its now at 45%
tried everything i could think of .
and i know its gona go up bcuz i need to add water when i get home.

Sounds like you have it fine to me. My humidity has been around 70 with all the babies hatching and the next 4's air cells still dropped a lot the last day or so.

Was it hard to sex them? Did it hurt them? I've wanted to try, and I've watched the hatchery (mes.) video on it, but being inexperienced I'm a little nervous.

I'm sure glad they like clover! They will have plenty of that. I tend to forget who lucky Julie and I are, we have lots of plant varieties that do well here in the centrall midwest.

Poor SM! I havn't candled any of my eggs since right before I put them into the bator on Sunday and Monday. My air cells looked ok on big ones, and I know at least two had clearly visable yolks, so maybe I will get some. I couldn't see anything whatsoever in the sebbie eggs, but most foks here and Amy (the seller) said to give them a few days. I'll just candle on Sunday or Monday, and hope I'm getting a chance at least! I really want some geese now.

You know how it is in smaller bators, if you put them in, you get attached to them. I hate to be emotionally involved in bird reproduction, but at least I'm in good company.

I didn't have any choice but to lean mine. I don't think they are at quite 45*, but they are leaned up on the empty turning rack area bottem plastic supports. They are the only ones being hand turned. Do I need to get mine up higher? I can send a pic but I'm not a good degree guesser. Id say about 15* - 25* is their angles.

Hey SM - I got another hova from your incubator dealor. Your right, they ship MUCH faster. Worth the extra few bucks. I also bought goose egg turning racks that I can put on my frame, but I don't think I can put 4 lg and 5 med. eggs in such a small space. I guess I'll be hand turning all month.

I've had that happen too! Only a few ducks get attached, most are healty and don't need care. It's actually been a few years. I think i miss it...... I hope he and his buddy get to be close soon.

It wasn't that hard. They squeaked, but I think just as much from being upside down as from me molesting their little parts.

It wasn't that hard. You just have to make sure it's flipped all the way out so there's no pee pee hiding. And there's a lot of poop that comes out. Gross black poop like babies first poop.

I think it's easier when they are little. I couldn't ever sex my calls because their down was so thick I couldn't even see their vent.

I missed a quote. SM- One of my call ducklings was like that. It acted like it's neck wouldn't work for 2 days. I left it alone in the incubator for a day, then put her in a little margarine cup that just gave her room to sit, stand, not put her head underneath herself. She was ok by day 3, and was perfectly normal and running on day 4.

Hi GJ!

I do organic heirloom gardening. Basically its older varieties that are true to type seeds. That means when you grown only that corn, you can save seeds from it, and plant them next year to get that exact corn - same everything. DItto tomatoes, carrots, etc. If you are going to raise several varieties togather, though (like 7 tomatoes) don't bother, they will cross and create hybrids, which will never be exactly like either parent.

Think of it as a blond w/ blue eyes who is 5'6" (and so are all thier parent) having a child with another blond w/blue eyes who also has parent 5'6". If all their parent parents were the same, the chances are excellent that their children will be 5'6" blonds w/ blue eyes.

Oh, I've got a better ones. Its like White pekings, if they only mate white pekings, your never gonna get a cross or an ancona either. Ditto w/heirloom seeds. Long standing, proven, make expected offspring.
Oh I remember, Was it Marty and Jazz that do the heirloom seed thing? What are heirloom seeds exactly? I just got a catalog to some company and was curious. Is it just seeds that have been passed down through the generations?
Not sure I need one more project... but ya know.. it's interesting.

i hope so .
im going to check them when i get home.
some have decent sized air cells and some have smaller.
but otherwise i think all 15 eggs are doing good. well ok 14, 1 looks questionable but still have red veins so idk. but just looked like the baby was slumped to one side.

i wish i could fast foreward i want fluffy babies.
everyoen else is getting way toooooooo big.
they are growing like weeds.

9 fluffy cute babies. 1 still in the incubator, giving him a few more hours but he was the last to come out of his shell so he's a tiny bit behind.
Going out today and seeing if I can get my 3 snowy's to quack. I've got a few real quacks from the magpies, just need the others to confirm if they are boys or girls.

Celtic, I understand that! I am convinced that Florida is way too hostile an environment for many types of animals. It is the same as me not wanting to have sebbies here in the northern mountains of Utah, but the black cayuga is ideally suited for my climate. Ironically, the cayuga seller also lives in central Florida. She also has very nice blue cayugas. Here is a pic of her blues:

And to those who garden.... I was so excited to see all my early blooming flower bulbs sprouting up this week!! Spring is in the air and I can't wait for gardening season to start.
