Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

That's why I did it...... I think it's worth it in the long run. I was adding it all up the other day and I've spent over $500 on birds just this year

and it's only March!

Don't feel bad. I've bought a lot of eggs, and now some ducks, this year. I'm afraid I've had a bit of a holiday.

I tried to vent sex and I think she is s girl but I will check again in a couple days. She still is kinda wobbly on her legs so she is in the dog kennell with her stuffed bunny. Gave her some food and water and came back five minutes later and she had fallen into the mash food and was covered with it so she had to have a quick rinse off and back into the incubator for a nice warm dry time.

It's gotta be fresh goat milk. That crap in the can you find at the store just doesn't work the same. I wish you were coming down my way julie. I've got some frozen colostrum in the freezer from the goats. I keep it in there just in case we need it for puppies or baby goats. oh and by the way for those of you who make goat cheese let your chickens have the whey mine drank it up when I had some and it's packed with vitamins.

Chickens and Pigs both love it. Oh, and dogs and cats and most of the poultry in general!

What kind of cheeses do you make? I stilck to mesophilic starters (although I make lemon cheese all the time, we love it), but I've mad lactic cheese, and yogurt cheeses too. I've never made thermophillic yet, but I'm interested. I've got a press, but I only make 2 lbs cheeses, it's not big enough for 5s.

If it's pasturized then it won't work as well. It would probably work better than the can stuff, but not as good as RAW.

What about the goats milk in the refrgerated section? If not I found some on craigslist that can deliver close to me during the work week, but I still need to get esbilac for this weekend.

aww.... This afternoon the 3 new button quail got their brooder set up, and the first thing they did was get soaking wet in the water. Had to change to an old salt celler, with 2 marble in it. sooo tiny......

Ha, that's a story all in it's own....... I've actually only made cheese twice. The first was a soft cheese that didn't require any cutting of the curd, but the second time was my attempt at cottage cheese. It wasn't bad tasting, but it squeeked on your teeth and you couldn't stand to eat it because of that. So yeah, I'm really not a cheese maker, but I've gave it a good effort. The whey was way worth it though cause the chickens loved it ha ha ha, get it the whey was way worth it. Okay, that wasn't very good, but it's getting late so you'll have to cut me some slack.

Isn't it funny how we get excited about feed shopping?

Not really. I was thrilled. Today I came home with a 50lb bag of DE and a 45lb bag of certified organic feed from the farm. Then I hit the feed store for all-purpose feed (switching the pekins over to lower protein so they don't get leg issues) and bedding. I love the people at our feedstore.

I was all prepared to ogle the ducklings, but they were sold out again. There's a good market for ducklings out here right now. Hopefully they're lifetime pets and not pre-easter impulse buys.

i just had some weirdo email me asking if i had any duck calls because his wife needed one.
like wth!!

Duck calls. LOL. Hubby was actually going to buy a duck call and see if our ducks would come to us...

Look what I got! Hubby's uncle was working and had to cut down a limb that had fallen part the way on a roof. There was a nest and these 2 fell out so he brought them to me. Love baby squirrels, it's been years since I had one. They are fun, but man they have some sharp claws.

I've got 10 Top Show Quality Silkie ducklings coming from Holderread. Haven't heard anything on a ship date yet, but i'm super excited and would like some of all the colors hope I get a good selection. At least by getting the TSQ I'm guaranteed silkie feathered ducklings.

I want many, many, many silkies. But my wallet isn't deep enough these days.

Here, this way you don't need to click on a link lol.

I know! Their sooooo stinking expensive!!!! I got the normal (Wishing I got TSQ) And it was like $45 for 3... OUCH!!

Exactly. I got lucky being able to hatch those few eggs from the farm. Too bad I have to give them the ducklings. But hey, I get the pleasure without the feed bill.
