Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

Just wait.. They are like puppies in bird form. I did not know that about being oldest domesticated, but it makes sense!

DG: Yay for gooseys. Get me a pic of runty tmw. Puh-leeeeeeeeeeeeese!

CG: LOVE the pic of Fly. And the geese are getting so BIG!

Utah: Precious talouse. (sp) They are so cute. And the SA.. who knows. Could be both. lol

Celtic: I'm going with Girl. It HAS to be a girl. It quacks better than any duck I've ever had. It's like a human saying QUACK. I mean... it's crazy.

What usually causes wry neck? I've heard of it, but have never seen it. From what I've just read, it sounds like it could be caused by a variety of different things (aspergillosis, botulism, etc.)...??

Christine, sounds like wry neck. I had a duckling get it at 8 days old. Fixed it with a polvisol drop mixed with kale 3x per day for one week.

It will be nice to have a waterfowl that adores me for a change! I wish I could time a hatch to conincide with schools end, so we could hang with it every day all summer. Think we'd ever get them to leave us alone then?

Oh, you should see Lucky, he is growing so fast, he makes regular pekings look slow!

At first, he and the chicks (who are older) were the same size. The next day, he was noticably larger. Last night DH kinda freaked out when he saw how huge he was allready. He's seen some baby ducks now, but Luckys takes the cake. He is huge. (I've send a mail (via ebay) to the guy I got him from, begging more eggs - ebaying some more button quail eggs too)

The poor unfortunate baby button that DD dropped continues to eat, drink, and sleep, but the legs are stiff and stuck out behind him all the time. He can't even make himself set upright. He has a nest in a clear box, designed to keep him in a "normal" position. I'm thinking head/neck/spine trauma, but I think if he's still alive tomarrow, I'm gonna try electrolytes. If he can just keep eating and drinking, he may still come out of it, but I'm getting less optimistic.

Marty, awesome to hear Lucky is doing so well. Sorry to hear button not showing improvement yet. I love my ducklings. They are cute and sweet. But goslings see you as mom. You are protector to them. It's very different than ducklings and I am sure you will fall in love!!

Christine, sometimes even with quality feed, some ducklings need more vit b (thiamine). Wry neck looks like the head is permanently slightly tilted like looking at you with one eye.

That's not what this looks like. His head isn't tilted at all. If you were looking down at him, it looks like his whole neck is off to one side. I wish this stupid picture would load! It's hard to describe.

Agreed.

That would have to be some very cute and charming goslings! I wove my wittle waddly duckies! I can't imagine loving anything more than them in the poultry world, but I'm excited for baby geese too, and am certainly prepared to adore them.

Did you know geese are the oldest domesticated poultry?

Did not know that.

My goosies are coming along quite nicely in the incubator. I'm looking forward to them, though I'm not sure if I'm going to keep them or not. I must be kidding myself. Unless someone offers me $$$ for them, I'm going to keep them!

I just got home from our first 4H meeting... so I'm going to bed. Softball practice then 4H meeting (30 minute drive one way) THEN home and with 3 kids. Whoa is me.

Busy, busy, busy. Get those kids to bed and get some quiet time!

It's a CSA week for me and I'm already a) worn out and b) thinking it's a day later in the week than it is. We're hosting a beekeeping course at the farm tomorrow on top of CSA pickups and farm store. I can't wait until I get a day to sleep in (who am I kidding there?).
