Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

Um.. I wouldn't do that. Just me. Then they're sitting upside down. Yikes.. good luck with that. At least hubby cares! Mine has been anti-duck lately. (but is in love with fiona.)

I think it was Celtic mentioning the full moon. And then I saw another post tonight about ducks hatching early. So weird.

What's crazy is that it's a wide-spread issue...not just in one area of the country. My chicks hatched 4 days early, and had to be helped. I've never had so many quit during incubation, and then theres the shrink wrapping, and backwards babies....think I'm going to end up bald before all is said and done.

2 of 5 eggs are backwards... One of which was pretty twisted up. The other 3 are in proper position, but drowning in fluid. I find that very weird since they cooked in fairly low humidity with my goose eggs and my goose eggs have lost close to 16% weight. All had mild shrink-wrap but I locked them down a day early.

What kind of candler are you using that you can tell they are backwards? What are you seeing that tells you they are backwards? I hope I don't have this issue, but need to know how to identify it.

I'm so confused as to why I had at least two ducklings drown in fluid (not shipped) and yet I'm getting shrink wrap at the same time?

The air cells dipped as expected, everything looked on par. Candled the day before lockdown. Now I think 60% of the runner eggs are dead (2 were for sure). The fact that I have 2 BEI's pipped was a complete shock, I thought they were toast along with the rest. Hopefully my buyers are understanding.

My other three eggs were like that. Mild shrink on the outside, but lots of fluid on the outside.

Dutch, in the past, when I have other eggs that position to pip well, and then there are 1 or 2 that look off, then I flag them to see. However, when I opened up my first Cayuga, thinking it was shrink-wrap, I found him backwards with head under yolk sack. Same with my wrong way. I was very surprised to open air cell and see a yolk sack.

Well, here's the update: 1 runner pipped backwards, 1 runner that may have broken yolk sac: has yellowish ick inside membrane. Both of these are very weak. 2 more runners in various stages of hanging out in the eggs. 3 BEI's pipped, one of which is zipping like a jackhammer. I expect to meet the BEI shortly.

I should take a nap in the meantime. I have to work tomorrow.

Hi peeps. Spent all Easter at a car club convention. Hubby won a prize for his car. Because it was the only one in its category. Still a win.

Lovely pics of the ducks and turkeys, JZ.

Sorry to hear about some of the difficult and disappointing hatches that people are having at the moment

Hi Quackrrs!

Yes, take a nap.... A stressful late night before work is no fun the next day.

Hope your BEI's come charging out overnight.

I've got one that's totally ready to come out. The BEI's aren't due till Wednesday (along with the goosies). I'm worried about backwards pipper and icky-stuff-in-the-shell guy.

What does a ruptured yolk sac look like, kinda like yellowy bird-poop-cottage-cheese-curd-gunk?

A ruptured yolk sac looks like raw yolk. Not cottage cheesy. At least that's how it looked when I saw one in my incubator.

Still, the yolk sounds like the most likely candidate if you are seeing a lot of yellowish wettish stuff.

Icky-stuff guy doesn't sound too good :-(

Backwards pipping can often end well - don't rush in to help that one.
