Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

I'd love to have quail, if I had the time. Are you going to hatch some, Julie? Quail really like to dust bathe, apparently.

As soon as I get a few more, I'll have them in the incubator. My quail have a box with some leaves, and another with gravel that I put bird seed in for them to scratch through. I need to get them some sand so they can dust bath soon. I wonder if they like ashes like chickens? I have plenty of them, I'm sure the chickens would share some.

Country_girl, I'm sure by next Christmas I'll have plenty and would gladly send you some.

No, they just have a problem with the lavenders "body" shape and color. Some totally gave me a lecture and told me I shouldnt be breeding my lavenders unless i have good quality

I want to keep a hen or two, and a rooster, but I reqlly like the look of all the colors.
Then she told me theres no such thing as "good" quality lavenders, and told me I shouldnt breed them without good quality. Seems like she is just trying to be bossy I think.

Oh, ok. Well they are yours and yours to do with as you will and if you are just a back yard breeder breeding for yourself then no one should complain. If someone did want to buy them then tell them the quality so at least they are warned.

Most people around here just want a backyard bird, so these would be fine for that...

hopefully by next year i can find some, my neighbor gave me some but they were all rotten , so in the trash they went.
if our chickens would cooperate, and lay just a few more darn eggs rather than 1 a week. then i would have what i need. lol.

Edit: following on from discussion about Lavender Orps: No, it's not like the crested gene. It's just a colour. But, having achieved the colour in Orps, others have been working on trying to improve the type. I think there is a sense of protectiveness from these people towards the Lav Orps - they want to keep control over quality. As a result, DG was discouraged from breeding hers in another thread (but also given some helpful advice on how to keep the quality up by introducing a good black bird). I understand that perspective for sure. But I'm not sure it's a realistic goal and I also don't think that they should discourage others from breeding. In any breed there is a wide range of quality and people who breed for exhibition through to people who breed for pets. Lav Orps are going to be no different.

Yeah, first she told me to try and help the breed, then said not to if I have bad quality

Thank you for the explination. I am not good with chickens and the color thing so my input would not be valid. I just didnt know what the big deal is with breeding them. I think there is 2 type of chicken people as well. The type that breed for their backyard and others that breed for SQ. I think it is up to her to do what she wants with them. Plus there is plenty help from people on here if she does want to improve them
