Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

BTW, it is nasty outside here. SNOWING. I hate it. There are wrecks all over the place. I guess it is really slick. My mom is suppose to go to Iowa City tomorrow to start on another trial testing. I hope she will be ok driving up there. Mu brother is going with her so she should be ok. Right now we have about an inch of snow on the ground. Wonder with the ducks will think abour this deep snow tomorrow when I let them out.

Its been cold all week and now snow and then this weekend it might get up to 30, maybe. LOL Its really light outside though. It looks like its about 7 in the morning.

I told my hubby if all the eggs hatch and the babies live, I am going to buy duck diapers so they can run around the house. He said no way no how. I told him though that the babies can't go outside right away because its too cold out for them and they need to get some exercise. I'm gonna keep them in the bathtub for awhile. We don't use the bathtub and its too cold to use the front porch and my nephew just moved in with us for awhile to save himself some money so I can't use the room I have planned on because he is in that room.

Do they sell duck diapers?

Yes, but I don't think you want to mess with it. They will be able to go outside sooner than you think. Beaker and Bunsen are already going outside. Beaker is almost feathered out! I need to update his picks for you guys. I swear every morning I check on him and he's grown feathers in his sleep.

Oh and BTW: My orps and australorps (AKA: The "Big Girls") haven't laid any eggs in 8 days. All 4 stopped on the same day, and haven't laid since.

Now it did get cold quick here, and it does appear as if they are molting.. But 8 days?

QJ- I've only got 2 chicken eggs in the past like 4 days. I have around 15 who should be laying. They don't have lights, and it's gotten cold. A few (the 2 18 month girls and a silkie who just got done trying to be broody a few weeks ago) are molting. Everyone else just got too cold I guess. The ducks are still laying 2 every morning though.

Thanks Julie, you made me feel better considering were in the same Metro Area. I was thinking.. Am I not feeding them enough? Am I not taking care of them right? (Which is ridiculous I know... )

My ducks are done. Can't wait for Spring though!
