Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

I know ~ like we have nothing better to do than answer questions that are already answered in the ad ! Or get emails about different breeds etc.
YES! I thought we were selling birds not giving bird seminars

Morning all,
Sue tell Jerry I said hi and I hope he feeling better soon. Oh and don't over do it this week with the grand daughter he has goose houses to build after all!
tongue.png
anytime you have questions on the Sebbies just yell, I am still learning too, but willing to point you in the right direction.
Dutch, hope they are A OK this morning. Will bite my tongue on that entire thing. Oh and I was copied on the same email as you and Iain too.
Iain, wow is all I can say. What a way to return home. How is the other gosling hubby made an appointment for? I built a sling like that before for another animal, they work very well and are super simple to make.
We had Lav, Choc and mystery guinea keets hatch. Some Khakis from a nice strong blood line to add newness to our bloodlines here. The final three Sebbies hatched and were listed for sale after making sure they are good and strong. Worked on a new flight pen some this past weekend, figured out which netting we will cover it in and will be ordering it in. Have to trench around it next to bury the side panels.
Hubby had lost use of his legs, but then regained some use with the help of crutches to support his weight. He had to return to active duty, but can't drive so my day is spent getting him up and around and then back home. The baby (not such a baby at 17 months now) started picking up his toys and putting them away all on his own last week after he watched daddy try and get around his things.
what a sweet little boy! hope hubby feels better soon!
Here's Spirit this morning:

wow amazing improvement!
These babies are going to my boss in a day or two:

love.gif

We had very bad rain and winds last night. It wiped away the newest building (flipped it over and spread the contents). Too bad the contents was my buffs, started ducks, and a baby sebbie, and Luna my pet.

Actually, this morning so far I've recovered one gray dewlap, 4 buff dewlaps, the young sebbie, and 3 young khakis. I've lost one duck, Luna (Erins gosling), and a Khaki. Found the buff drounded (it blew into a koi pond) but no sign of Luna or the other buff. I've walked about 15 acres surrounding us this morning looking for them since 5. Its 6:30 now and I have up 10 minutes ago. All other adults are fine (and Celtics four were just dandy)

Celtic - If you need another ear, you know my number and may feel free to use it. (Did I mention 3 of 5 brothers, my DH, and my folks were all military)

Hope the storm wrecked no great violence elsewhere.

Oh, my quail are hatching again.

LOVE IT!
love.gif

Morning all, super late start to my day after not stopping until after 10 last night. Hubby is back in the hospital, met with his new team of Doctors yesterday and his admitting DR seems committed to finding an answer. Thanks for the well wishes.
Iain, hope the buff boy recovers, he may need lots of restricted rest/quiet time to heal up. Warm swims are always easy on stress injuries.
Dutch, glad the new goslings arrived ok. Male Africans are just always more vocal from what I have seen. My gander doesn't care for anyone but me, so they are rear pasture birds most of the time.
Hope they continue to be commited until they find a reason and your hubby is on the road to recovery!
Good info Wulf!

goodpost.gif
That last pick is me in a nut shell! happy to have the business but will be even more happy for this job to be done tomorrow!
Jaz, Funny posts!!! Hahahaha!!! Yeppers, my obnoxious gander's name is Ebay. Here's the irony....Ebay is the 1st ever gosling I hatched and he is actually from Celtic's eggs. But I mixed him up at birth with No. 1, who is from eggs I bought off ebay. By the time I realized I had them mixed up, the names had already stuck. Oh well.

Here is the latest on Piper (my buff dewlap gander). He has a soft tissue injury in his hip. He is prescribed .5 cc 2x per day and rest for the next 7 days. He should be just fine. And my oh my he was a hit at the clinic. It took me almost an hour to leave lobby since everyone who worked there had to pet him and say goodbye to him, and comment how he is the nicest goose they had ever met.
love.gif
Happy to hear Piper is on the mend!
Utah! It's busy here. Got one person out at work... and at the farm, one less farmhand turns everything into pure chaos.

But I hatched...

There are 19 total. They are for my boss and moving to the farm on Monday.

The first chicken egg pipped this evening. I'm going to be overrun by cute little fuzzies this weekend.
love.gif

GQ, congrats on a wonderful hatch!!! Hope they find someone soon to help out at the farm.

Marty, how are you holding up? How are your dewlaps and sebbies doing? What is the latest on your pekins that are cooking in bator??

I hope my run of bad luck is over. Between Spirit's regular visits, No. 1 (my african) getting bit by a dog, Ginger (buff girl) getting shipped with a horrible abscess, and Piper (buff boy) having a sprained hip... I have been to the vet more in the past six weeks than I have in over a year with the rest of my menagerie. And Spirit's next vet appt is in 2 days, which I am actually excited about as she is doing GREAT!! She has gone 4 days without splaying, rolling, or feeling any discomfort... and she RAN over 12 feet during turnout yesterday. RAN!

How out of all of my geese I love my 2 dark ones the Wild & toulouse/chinese cross ~ Who I have named
Samson & Delilah

I am not a fan of all white geese I have found out, so eating my embdens is going to be easier. Don't know if I will be able to eat my dark ones & the colored sebbies I have. I am planning on keeping just 3 trios & the rest will be sold or to the freezer.

I took pics of the 5 Anconas Eye

gave me the other week

love.gif

OH... remember these little duckies??? Beaker and Bunsen?? (if not refer to about page 5 of this thread.)

Well.... Here is Beaker now!!

Sitting on her very first NEST!!!

ETA: Bunsen is standing guard on the outside.. and I LOVE how they let me and the kids get close to them, but attack any other ducks that come that way. lol. She still trusts me. Yay!!
love.gif

SOOOO happy mu hubby is handy! He is building my pheasant pen ~ I think he deseves a big kiss ! Will post pics later.... This is just phase one obviously
woot.gif

Also it's official the turkey's leg is never going to be normal
sad.png
. However, I'm looking into the best accommodations for a disabled turkey
hugs.gif

Meet the new additions to the duckie family. Not sure what their future is going to be since they are both drakes which I don't need more of. Hubby is in love with the runner like I knew he would be so he will be staying, just got to find him a few girls. The other I'm not sure of, but whatever it is will be better than what it was. I have decided it is my personal mission to rescue all the poor dumped ducks from the local parks.
big_smile.png
Went out to try today, and ended up coming home with these 2 guys. Trying again tomorrow, and every few days until I get them all. There's rescue groups for stray dogs, cats, etc, but no one to help these poor guys. So I am officially even more than before a crazy duck lady I guess, lol.
the tan boy is so cute! But i agree with hubby the runner boy is definatly a keeper
How I feel when people bring drama to this section:

goodpost.gif

Also I am defiantly NOT a morning person
caf.gif
Good morning. Trying to wake up with my coffee before leaving for Spirit's vet appt. She is looking much better this morning and seems like she just needed a good rest to recover from all her running around. I am most curious to see the vet's reaction to the dramatic change in her mobility and look forward to the next step in this long journey towards Spirit having somewhat normal feet/legs.

One other piece of news.... I met a guy yesterday who runs a local avian sanctuary and he has extra female geese that I can adopt (for a whopping $15 donation) to balance out my boy/girl ratio in my free range flock. He said he has an 8-10 year old african girl (I have her on hold) and either an Embden or Toulouse girl. I am super pleased to have found these geese and feel great to also help out our sanctuary. Hope to get to the sanctuary tomorrow or the next day to pick them up.

Hope everyone has a happy Monday!
celebrate.gif

Since I've sold my gander my little girl has seemed a bit lonely. Since it's been too hot for me to spend much time with her outside, she's been coming in for visits.
too cute! hubby would poop a house lol!
LONG day here. Spirit lost all mobility with the 2nd cast, so I went back to the vet this afternoon to have it redone. The vet attempted 3 different types of casts, each with slight improvement. Then we studied all the before/after pics I brought with me and he decided to intentionally immobilize her to torque the heel and outside toe, as he believes it will really help her. So, she will have to use the sling and be on pain meds for the next few days. But looking at before/after pics, we are both very hopeful that this will substantially benefit her in the long run. As the vet emphasized, we are not trying to get her to be able to walk well right now. Rather, we are trying to correct her feet/legs so she can walk normal for the rest of her life.

I hate seeing her uncomfortable, but sometimes we have to do what we have to do.
Here are before/after of her foot and a pic of the procedure this afternoon:

Hey guys! I actually took a couple pics of my Anconas today. Down to 4. 2 blues, 1 lavender, and 1 black. My blue male has a rusted chest which looks pretty cool. All blue on top but rusty boobies. I think he looks pretty neat. My daughter and I played around with the chalk today. My fence looks so cute now.

love.gif

Oh my gawd, someone please tell me what this is and how I can get one? Can I keep it in my bath tub?

droolin.gif

I still need to paint it.... So this run cost us under $300 for all materials ! The roof took 4 ~ 8' clear plastic panels, SO the covered coop area is 7'x8' & the grass run is 8'x8'
One pen is 15' L x 8' W & 7' Tall

We finished one of our pheasant pens yesterday ~ there will be a total of 4 seperate areas. We are making it multi purpose so it can be all one or 4 seperate etc. CAN be used for anything ... Whelping, ducks, chicks, pheasants, goats, wallabies, zebras etc!

Margarita's that contain beer.

This is my Beergarita recipe. If you do not have a 64 oz blender you will have to cut the recipe in half. One, 12oz can of frozen raspberry lemonade or limeade (personal preference), 12oz of the cheapest tequila gold you can find. One, 12 oz can of cheap light logger beer, and fill with ice to 64 ounces. They are so good! I have never tried making them with good tequila or good beer because they are already perfected to my taste.

CONGRATS !!! Where did you buy your pekin eggs?
Can I see a pic of Lucky? I am going to pasture them on my neighbors 10 acres over the summer so I hope that helps out on the feed! I also just bought another 1000 pounds of feed @ 17 cents a pound. I am buying that much every payday so I will have plenty of feed over the winter. I have buyers for my pekins, and only keeping a handful til butcher weight for myself

This was for my "business" side of what I am doing..... To see the poultry market & demand @ Chinatown & the Fresh Markets.....in SEATTLE

Went to Chinatown yesterday, and have the hookup for all the duck eggs, ducks, geese I can supply to their underground market at top dollar to boot. Their eating duck eggs go for around $6 for 6 eggs, and Salted duck eggs are $3 each ~ CHECK this out ......

I had the MOST AMAZING FOOD EVER !!!!!!!!!!! I was so full ~ it was like having thanksgiving dinner for breakfast! Was crazy ~ it was like the food courses kept coming ~ they didn't have a menu, they just wheeled a fresh cooked food cart around from table to table letting you choose which bowls of food you wanted. It was the coolest!!!

We had Chicken feet ! ( well my hubby & my kids ate them, I was "chicken")

We bought one of these .... I HAVE TO LEARN HOW!!! It has to be the best tasting thing since BACON...... YES I said it ALMOST better than bacon!
droolin.gif
They had a goose hanging their to.... $60 bones
ep.gif
I will buy one next time, just so I can taste it, so I can learn how to cook it. SORRY if this offends anyone, but their is a reason the The people of the Orient keep the poultry whole when cooking. Sajorno (the guy who took us on the tour) Explained the ritual & the blessing of the animal & the reason for keeping it whole, Actually I learned ALOT about their customs, religion, and meanings behind symbols ~ Was a huge culture shock, but was one of the BEST days FUN, YUMMY, FAMILY & EDUCATIONAL

We will have to meet up & go out for breakfast on a Saturday this summer! We can talk turkey

oh and warning/advice/FYI, watermark your photos you share online. Never know where they might end up otherwise. Have had many a BYC member with photos stolen to use in ebay ads and on websites. Even one hatchery (more like middle man broker) took BYC member photos in the past.
your new buckling has amazing eyes! the the silver appleyards are sooooo pretty
Hi Celtic, nice pics. Its good to see you again.
frow.gif
I was wondering when I didn't see you. Your are friend, and we are always happy to see you.

Hey GQ, good to see you too. Sounds like we are all early morning girls. I usually get up at 5-5:30, but the early light of dawn always wakes me up.

How was everyone Independence day? Ours was a bit out of sorts towards the end, but we managed to struggle through the last little bit. After a flawless evening, the very last big firework thing (a multi deal) sent off 2 of 15 rounds, before knocking itself over and flipping about with the next 13 shots. Big balls of fire hitting the old barn, the wood fence, started 3 different grass fires..... Just glad we talked with the girls about what their jobs in a fire were. Little one turned on the hose (which we had next to the launch pad) and she and I started on the wood fires while Dad and Ruth ran and started on the grass fires. We were barely able to get all fires out before someone called the fire department.

sounds aaaaaamazing!!!!!
Hello guys,
If a day can be any sadder than this one I don't think I could get out of bed!! I lost half of all my ducks last night, we had a very bad storm and when we went down this morning 5 of my drakes were missing. The only one to survive we had to put down as he had gashes and flesh missing from his neck.
sad.png
Then I went to my other pen that held my Green drake and his 4 girls, 3 of them were gone with just a few feathers showing that they were even there. What ever too all of them sure wasn't very nice and left no evidence as to were they got in. The only thing that I can think of is it must be owls or eagles to carry away Rouens and Pekin hybreds. So now I must start over and try to pertect what I do have left. I now wish I didn't get out of bed this morning!!!!!!

Well i took the duckling to the wildlife care center and they said it was a wild mallard duckling so they kept it and will release it when it is ready. I miss the little cutie pie already and I only had it less than 24 hours but it is for the best. Why do ducklings have to be soooo cute.

hugs.gif

The 'lings waiting on new homes...

whole bunch of cuties right there!
What a drag. But the ones who finally get themselves aligned with the right birds and owners, are very very happy customers, and totally worth waiting for.

OK, thought things were all groovy for us after our close call with the fireworks last night. Well, WRONG AGAIN. 12 days ago, I bought 6 cute little volkwagons (60's decade), and had to wait for him to move a few cars so I could get them hauled home for rescue. Nice little expendature, but we love the classics, and know what we're doing. He lives on the other side of town (pop. 35,000 - so not too bit, but not tiny) Turns out, he was gone for the day to his sons, and the neighbor kids accidently shot something at his house. Nobody realized they started a fir soon enoughe, but it burned his house, his outbuildings and barns, and all of the cars he had there. Out of 6 vws, only two are still intact. (He lost about 43 cars) The others are hardly going to have a useful part on them. Told DH I'd have to make them into bird houses now, who on earth would want to repair them?!

I sold this beauty off with a hen, if only he had been a she.

I kept this one because he is more solidly colored.

Here is my sweet white juvenile drake with blue eyes. I need to sell him too so he doesn't become dinner.

so pretty! what breed are they?

YES! I thought we were selling birds not giving bird seminars
caf.gif
Indeed. I offer to share information with first-timers. That usually means a quick little overview on duckling care and a link to BYC. I always give a care sheet with a business card at the time of purchase just in case they need to ask questions later. Beyond that, I'm not a full-service hatchery...
I thought the raccoon was cute, but now that I have ducks, not so much.
Indeed. The previous owners of our house fed the raccoons, so my first summer here, there was mama with a group of six kits on our porch every night. Thought they were cute until I heard what they do to ducks.
I sold this beauty off with a hen, if only he had been a she.

I kept this one because he is more solidly colored.
I love scovies! However, I'll never keep them as pets. They reproduce so fast, I'd be overrun the first year.
Here is my sweet white juvenile drake with blue eyes. I need to sell him too so he doesn't become dinner.

He needs to go to a breeding home. He's perfect!
love.gif

Marty, sorry about the accident! I called the sheriff on a few teenagers target shooting into the brush today and it took an hour to get a phone call back. Then, teenagers started firing off rounds fast enough to sound like fireworks and sheriff got a call from other neighbor about fireworks. They showed up within 15 minutes. Guess next time I will call in a report of fireworks instead.
I hear ya about hatching. I do not miss my bat ors being on! I am loving watching my goslings grow up into beautiful birds.
I can always get my super cuteness baby duck fix from pics like the ones Quackers just posted.
Crazy that they come faster for a fireworks call than for gunfire. But its the same here really.

Hey guys long time no see! so since the last time i have been on here all but one of my ducks is new (predators ravaged through), my meaties have moved on to freezer land, and i have turkeys

Scotch and his new girls Marshmallow (white layer), Latte (golden layer/runner), Pepper (golden layer) Scotch (all the way to the right) Hazel (Left- KC)

my little Scotch is a big boy now

ok now i have a question, my son is modeling outside the duck shed to give us an idea of the space (he is about 4 feet tall and 50ish pounds).... i would say it is about 8 feet wide and i could probably come out another 6-8 feet on either side and about 5 feet tall, would this be a big enough night time run for 5 ducks and possibly a couple more in the future. This would only be at night to keep them safe

especially the poults! As for your question I would think if it's just a night pen I don't think it would be a issue,

My sweet innocent little touslouse/duck/turkey flock has been sneaking over to a neighbors house and pooping all over their yard.

They called today, its been going on 2 days. ((LOL)) so anyway, they are nice neighbors, so I've just spent the last few hours with DH putting up a 30 x 60 pen under the shade trees for the little huligans. Its only temporary, as we're waiting for fenceing I've ordered to come in to finish fencing off an acre of yard just for our newly beloved geese. The three ducks are going to be integared into the selected pens, as they are egg khakis form a duck egg family up north.

The mother of these 3 (out of 12 shipped) Khakis laid 325+ eggs last year. Then, I'm going to clear out some khakis from the lessor pens and see how the anconas do as layors. (In another month Lucky should start to lay)
