Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

Everything is decent. lol

I was actually in here researching the Java chicken, and you will NEVER guess who I saw posting over there. Marty?

I miss the icons in here.. they are so much fun.

Utah: Is the great goose rescue over? Did you find homes for everyone?
Yes, I have a secret flock! LOL I even bought some more 2 monthes ago, so now I have my grandmas and a new small flock and 2 youngsters. Mottled javas for me.

I know 4 rescues are at my place, and I wouldn't trade them. Dude, the toulouse fellow is a fine thumping laddie. The white africans may be white but they are no angles! They love to be in chrage, and fuss at the other geese & I for anything we do. LOL I love them, and they are beautiful!

#4 is out I forget how long it takes ducklings.

So far we have I think a blue (I say think because I'm just shining my light in the dark incubator to try to tell colors), Silver, lavender and the last one is black.
Congrats on the new hatchlings! The pictures were very cute. Congrats on the new colors too starting off the season on a great note.

Yay for ducklings!

The last four of my Serama eggs hatched last weekend. I'm amazed at how fast chicks start getting their feathers. At a week old, my little ducklings are still little fluff balls.
I made that same comment to hubby yesterday. Ducks and chicks from the same hatch, chicks have wings, ducklings are all fuzzy

Doing some research and thought I'd pop in and say

(before BYC crashes my computer.)

nice to see you popping in again

Hey QJ! Glad things are going well. Wish your computer would cooperate to let you hang out with us more! The rescue is done. I got metzer to go get 31 geese from the place in cali and I also placed 52 of the 69 I took home with me. I lost one in shipping to a new home, but the rest are spread all over the country now. I feel really good about the adoption placements but for one adopter. Now, hubby and I are in full design and building mode getting our guys sorted in time for breeding season. Always something to do around here.

Coyote, congrats!! I see the cutie chick in corner of pic. ;)

I'll get some better ones later today. This first one has an ugly duckling in the bunch can you spot him?

This one in the front above picture is definitely going in the grow out pen. Actually there are only 2 out of these 6 that I don't care to grow out. Now that they are out I'm thinking 3 black and 3 blue.
Nothing cuter than a duckling, congrats!

Coyote... much luck and here is a successful business year for you and your goals with the flocks. Nice to have so many newly hatched you want to grow out so early in the year.

Wish more understood the business end of keeping and breeding livestock (waterfowl/poultry) and not everyone has the same goals or wants to keep everything as a "pet". Lord knows we have never hidden the fact this is a working farm (our goal from the day we bought the place) not a hobby farm full of pets. On that note, we have 2 more geese and 1 more muscovy to butcher from 2012 then they all have been done. I think 2 silver appleyards left and then they are done too.

My geese are pets.

They were got with the intention of them being pets though, and will stay that way. I do have a few pet chickens and ducks, but the majority are livestock. If I ever breed/hatch out more geese here I plan on having at least one for christmas dinner. I do not look down on anyone that does eat theirs and I think it's silly that just because someone's birds are their pets they think everyone should have the same mindset as them. Hubby is the main vetoing factor in eating them here. I'm trying to find somewhere I can take my extra cockerals and drakes to be processed, or just process myself somewhere he won't see and cry about though. Realistically there just isn't going to be a place for every drake or rooster, and I would rather mine have a good life and end up in my freezer than give them away to be neglected or treated bad by someone.

Quote: Me too Julie, I dont begrudge anyone wanting pets, but do expect them to also give the same respect in return. I have said it before, if it werent for working farms there wouldnt be so many varieties of animals so widely available for pet keepers. There also wouldnt be loaded shelves in the supermarket. I feel we are fortunate to know where our food comes from with everything we can raise for our own use.

I know in many part of the country you can Kosher butchers, they will often process for you. If you have Amish near by thats an option too.

I see the imposter! I think ducklings are so much cuter than chicks - they just look so sweet and cuddly!

You did a good thing taking in all those geese. I didn't follow the story super closely, but I'm sure that was a huge amount of work and expense. Sorry you had one that didn't work out. Why would someone adopt a rescue animal and them get rid of it? It seems like most people that adopt rescues are more compassionate than that.

That's why adoption contracts are so important in any animal rescue - so you have recourse when the contract is broken. I know when I adopted my Arab mare, I had to sign a contract that stated that I would never breed her, would abide by certain standards of care, etc. The equine rescue organization comes out once a year and checks up on her, too, to make sure I'm taking care of her like I agreed.
