Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

They aren't protected. So I'm good. They are so smart. Pretty much anything a 10 year old with strong teeth could get into, they could. Locks, doors, WOOD! Apparently. I'll make sure the ducks are locked up good tonight, and leave the dog out. She will be mad.

QJ-
I'm so sorry. Once you get your coop fixed I have a pair of BO hens (just turned a year in Oct) that I was thinking of rehoming you could have, so you'd have a few layers until your chicks grow up. One is molting, the other is laying occasionally but none of my chickens are laying well at the moment because I don't give extra light.
This is one of them, over the summer when her and a silkie were raising chicks. She's the one molting, and would not appreciate me posting a pic of her on the internet in her current half naked state.

I'm also not sure about keeping all my delware/cochin pullets. They are very pretty, one's delaware marked the other is mostly white. They have fluffy feet and are bigger than bantam cochins, but smaller than delawares. They were hatched in July I think, and are just starting to lay.

I'm so sorry for your loss, QJ. The problem with raccoons is if there is one there is probably a whole family, so stay on your guard, even if you catch one. We have a two inch hotwire tape around the bottom of our run, and so far nothing has even tried to get in (that we know of). But I thought they would try to go under, not through, so don't know if that would help in your case. You could probably put more than one strand around about every 6" or so that they couldn't get between the strands without getting zapped. At least they didn't get to your ducks. That's something to be thankful for at least.

You guys are all just fantastic and it's so good to count you as my friends.

I'm pretty excited because I got a robot vacuum cleaner from my hubby. His mother is gonna kill him for giving me a vacuum cleaner but I love it. A few years ago he gave me tea towels (very expensive linen tea towels which I also loved because I have a bit of a thing for tea towels) and his mother still berates him for it.

Hope you are doing ok, QJ. I'm sure you still feel pretty shaken

QJ. Oh sweetie I am so sorry that they got your layers. That was coons. That's what they do is rip the heads off first. If you catch them call the DNR, they should come and get them. But since you live in town you would probably call the dog catcher. You might even call them and tell them the problem and they might bring live traps out for you. I've seen coons here in town but my ducks are inside a dog kennel and then straw bales all around the inside. Oh I also have about 10 inches of sand around the bottom of the kennel and tent stakes around the bottom of the kennel too.

Again.

:hugs you are in my prayers tonight. I am so so sorry.

Merry Christmas to all of my BYC friends. I love you all like you are my family, but you guys are nicer to be around because we all have something in common that we love... our ducks and chickens.
