ew ~ I am a newbie & have no idea what I am looking at or why. When one of my eggs are bad or don't hatch ~ my rule is I do not open

You are pretty sure that this egg has been incubated for over 28 days? If so, then keep going with chipping the shell and remove any membrane stuck to the duckling. You have already broken into the inner membrane that surrounds the duckling.

Oh. That does not look good. I would say that the duckling has broken the yolk. If you like you can keep going and break the inner membrane (which i had thought looked broken through but I was wrong about that). Try to locate its head. Unfortunately I don't think there is a lot of hope for this little one. If the yolk is broken then it doesn't have the nutrients and water it needs (and therefore not the energy either) and infection is also highly likely. I'm sorry

I'd give it a try though.

The yolk was broken and it wasn't alive.
I wonder if momma chicken got a little to excited in repositioning the eggs
