Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

Have one more duck egg in the incubator and tossed the two chicken eggs incthere. After 15 days there was nothing in them.

The baby duck was gorgeous. Dark brown like my Drake wit a half black half yellow bill

I'm really sorry about the little one with the broken yolk.

It most likely broke the yolk itself, moving about in the egg. I had one do that a week out from hatch day.

You did your best and as much as anyone could hope to do

I would say that breaking the yolk is pretty uncommon. Nothing to worry about routinely. Just unlucky with this little one

I don't think so. You didn't do anything wrong. Breaking the yolk would have been out of human control. I really think it's just an unlucky thing this time.

To try to get the best hatch all you can do is feed your adults a good quality feed with fresh greens and keep them happy with enough room and water and in a fairly clean environment. If you're already doing that then i wouldnt change things. Then do your best to get incubation conditions right. Putting eggs under a hen, as you did, gives the best chance of success.

The ducks eat layena with the chickens.
They get scratch mixed with it, rolled oats, lots of greens, grasshoppers weekly, worms, free range, oatmeal made with milk mixed with fruit. Peas. tons of peas.
