Well, it's clear that you care about your chicks, chickens and ducks a lot. When you put up photos of them they are always in good condition and healthy looking. I think you are a responsible owner.

Sometimes chicks die. I know plenty of responsible owners who are also very experienced and who breed a lot and still suffer major losses from time to time. Chicks are vulnerable to a lot of things that can make them sick. Probably the main thing is coccidiosis, which I'm sure you know. If a chick gets sick then the first thing I'd do is treat with something that will deal with the cocci. I use Baycox, because that kills the things that cause the problem (whereas other things tend to just slow them down). So that's my only advice, if you are not already treating them for cocci.

Just because you have had a bad run with chicks lately doesn't mean you are doing anything wrong or are not responsible. If they have enough space, a clean environment, heat, fresh water and appropriate care and/or medication when they are sick then you are giving them everything they could need and you are doing everything that a person could do.

i have heard of that sickness. we had a goat die from it the other day. and it wasnt even our goat, a friends $250 goat

I think you are responsible. You care for your animals. You did research beforehand, and when you have problems you ask to find out what is going on and how to fix it. We all have to learn somehow.

. some people on this site are very nice and others just aren't. You are doing your best and are still learning like the rest of us. And book knowledge will not teach you everything that comes with practical experience. And even if they had short lives you loved them all very much. I can see you take great care of all your birds from your photos.

Bad stuff can go wrong with chicks despite all precautions. I have a friend who is a very experienced breeder. Last week she put a bunch of newly hatched chicks under a broody hen. This hen had done a good job of raising day-old chicks before. But by the morning the hen had killed every single one of the chicks

My friend was terribly upset. But it wasn't her fault. It just happened.
