My mom grew up on a farm and still tried to tell me I needed a rooster for eggs. In her defense it was an actual working farm, not a hobby farm, though. They grew corn. They'd raise a few bottle calfs, a few pigs, and batches of meat chickens for themselves but didn't have layers. There's a dairy farm up the road, and a lot more corn/soybean growers, but I've never seen chickens while up there visiting.
I've also been told a few times I need special "layer food" or I won't get eggs. Really? Cause mine seem to do awesome on gamebird/scratch/oyster shell. They do ok on layer feed, but I'm done with that after this bag.
