Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

Happy 2013!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hubby and I had a lovely evening in front of the tv with pizza and a bottle of expensive champagne to toast new years in EST, so I could still go to bed by 10:30pm (my normal bed time). Hope everyone else had a nice time last night!

Christine, congrats on the new hatchlings. Any update on the dropped baby??

Julie, all geese are wonderful..... but I hope you get a dewlap as they are extra special.

Marty.......... all of our duck and goose eggs are from here and much more special, but still adding the rare chicken breeds so shipped eggs it is for awhile. Cant wait to have the new breeding runs done, one set for Rare Orps, one for rare color Brahma, one for GFF Rare breeds. Just a few of each for hatching eggs.

Oh and Marty on your sebbies everything from us is from WHITE stock. However white sebbies mask color so if two birds placed together both have hidden color splash is likely the result (which is what you have) Splash and splash gives splash and white, white to white gives white, white to splash can be white or splash. Never a grey from those pairings though. The white in them will continue to dilute the grey (splash markings) until they all appear just white again (off spring)

You guys are funny!

Coyote, I have one adult buff male/adult grey female that are my best quality and will be separated in their own pen. They will throw color-sexed babies. The rest of my ganders are juveniles. I have a really nice buff gander that has paired up with a fairly nice buff goose. I also have a really nice grey gander that is pairing up with a nice adult grey goose. They will also get their own pens. I have not decided yet if/how to separate the rest. Of course, I have my special needs group in their own yard to produce wonderful eating eggs. Prices will range from $5 to $15 for the eggs. Happy to help with hatching. I personally find geese easier to hatch than ducks!

I'm still debating on what I want to do because I do have some gray goslings already spoken for local. I will definitely let you know what I decide to do though. We have a lot of work to do this year. I may just focus on my ducks this year I'm just not sure yet.

I agree with the dewlaps being an acquired taste. Every time I see them, I like them a little bit better.
I had two chicks hatched when I got home from work. Neither are the one I dropped.
Babies!

Lol, since I can't decide what I want I might just have to go with the suprise. I would love whatever I got.

Congrats on the new years hatches. I think if I do any it will just be of my own birds, and maybe some mottled Javas from a different breeder with better egg layers.
Well, tell your birds to get to laying and join in on the hatching fun with us.

Sounds like a perfect new years to me. I was in bed by 8 (not feeling well). I woke up with the fireworks after midnight (feeling better

Thanks Julie you too!

Do the Seramas mature faster being a bantam so you will see eggs sooner from them? Cute little boogers, but little doesnt survive well free ranging.
Little does good around here actually. Predators seem to prefer ducks or big hens. I haven't lost a bantam yet.

The breeder I got some of them from said they begin to lay around 4 months old. My little cockerals are crowing (hatched mid oct). I love how friendly they are, I've decided to sell out on the d'uccles and keep the japanese for me, and seramas for me and dd. The seramas are every bit, if not more friendly than the parrots I used to have.

Coyote, thanks!! If you want any, let me know. I'll understand, though, if you decide to pass.

Julie, it was a great evening. Safer than being on the roads with the drunk drivers and tourists who have never driven in winter mountain conditions. Plus it was below 0F by midnight last night. Who wants to be out in that? Yuck. Sorry you are not feeling well. Hope you feel better soon!!

Ok, so I forgot to turn off my fan and have a shrinkwrapped duck. It had internal pipped early yesterday morning and done nothing, I had just left it since I wasn't up to messing with them then. I finally opened it, luckily since it was big time shrinkwrapped. Looked like someone stuck the poor duck in a white spacebag and put that in the egg. Anyhow, it looks weird. It's bill is a little off looking, and there's this weird grainy yellowish gunk by the hole where it tried to pip ( it had pulled itself back under the membrane, I guess going for a new spot). Any ideas of what's with the gunky stuff?
