I like this one... http://wildliferehabber.com/sites/default/files/wr_duckeggchart.jpgThanks for the link. I was able to get to it this time but the images are missing. I will bookmark it though and keep trying. I wonder why it's giving me such a hard time![]()
Wow.. what happened that the eggs were crushed? Congrats on the three successful assists. I'm hoping so too. I'm keep a close eye on the other eggs that came out of my broody's nest in hopes that they are all due around the same time. I will keep you all updated as the days go along since these eggs should be about ready to hatch and I have the others that have a hatch day on Saturday.
Oh my how horrible. I'm so sorry that happened, it must of been heart breaking. I like that name Akia. I wonder what caused Akia to get angel wing while Basil didn't.One of our bantam chickens stole some duck eggs and laid on them. She was not coming out to eat or drink, so we decided to feed/water her at the nest area. All our animals are in the same pen, goats, ducks, chickens, and at the time a pig. We believe our pig decided to nudge her way through the hay and stepped on the eggs.Only a few in the nest died immediately, so we brought the remaining few eggs in and attempted to hatch them.![]()
Long story short, we were not aware that they would dry out because of the cracks. We started candling and keeping track of their air sac size when we noticed many changes. Some developed air sacs on both sides of the egg. Others air sac dipped on one side almost to the bottom of the egg, and so on. We successfully hatched all, but then they later died. One I believe because the remaining bit of yolk dried out during the night, so it did not make it. Another, I believe was blind and very sickly like.
It was devastating, but we learned tons through the experience. We named them all and buried them. One of them that did make it has a deformed wing, called angel wing. We named him Akia which means first born in African. The little girl which was hatched the next day is named Basil and she ate everything the other one did and did not get angel wing.
When we helped him, we noticed his position was a little different than Basil. I know there is not evidence to support this and that angel wing is believed to be caused by eating too much protein while too young or genetics, but we feel it is a result to a slight malformation while in the egg.
I tried putting medical tape around his wing with the feathers aligned right and it did not work. I think we are going to try one more time with maybe Popsicle sticks as a brace on the top and underneath and leave for a month or so. Last time we did around two weeks. It improved initially, but since has returned to its normal state. He is a beautiful mallard other than his wingit's too bad.![]()
I am going to wait for others to comment, but from how I see the photos that does not look like an external pip.
The baby in that egg is moving?
Are you able to see the darker spot in normal lighting without candling?
How exciting about the internal pips. Did the "holy one" pip yet?![]()
