uploading pics of a lavender, a black, the two blues, and a splash. The other lavender and black are fluffing up...

SM- my drake is half blue swede half cayuga I think, or blue swede x welsh harleguin. The lady I got him from had cayuga and WH drakes, blue swede, buff, cayuga, and WH girls. All her ducklings were either black or blue. Cute, but not a lot of variety. My drake started as blue but is getting brown feathers on his body and green dots on his head. I thought my daughter colored on his head with a marker at first when those spots showed up, lol. I don't know duck genetics but I'm hoping he only has one copy of blue because of the other feathers and I'll have something besides black/blue ducklings. Someone needs to write a duckling color inheritance book for dummies, lol. I could use one.

DG- I only know things like helping them out of the shell and care after they are out lol. If you asked me anything about temp or humidity i am lost. Same with lock down, turning, and all that other stuff. I have no idea when that takes place or what the rest is.

And

OKAY and how do you know the doses of each color in the duck

The colour of the bird tells you its genetic makeup - or will give you a strong clue anyway. So, if it's a chocolate female then you know it has one dose of brown. The exceptions are black - you can't tell by just looking at a black bird whether it has only one dose or two doses of black. One dose is enough to turn a bird black, but they are meant to have two. When I say doses I mean 'number of genes inherited from both parents'. One dose means the bird only inherited one grge if that colour from either mum or dad. Two doses means it inherited one from each mum and dad. Brown dilution is also hard to tell by looking in the males. Males need two doses of brown to make them go chocolate. One dose will have no effect in males so you can't tell just by looking. The reason males need two and females need only one to look chocolate is because it's a sex linked gene (carried on the Z chromosome). Females only have one Z so can only have one dose of whatever is carried on the Z. Males have two Z's so they can have two doses of whatever is carried on the Z.

So,
