You have my sympathy! I guess I could try to upload a pic of my Julia, she got into the nail polish and painted her cheeks pink!! I havn't decided if I should use a cleaner on her soft skin, or just make her suffer it tomarrow in kindergarden. They can be more trouble than a dozen loose ducklings!!

Hi Stillmecle- Squishy is a cutie! Looks interested and spoiled; like hes waiting to have his bill rubbed or something! How are your other babies doing? Your the reason I attend this thread anyway... I got caught up in your early hatching dilemia. By the time Id read how it ended, I was kind of attached to all the kind and thoughtfull people who supported you through it. (I'm glad you didn't blow off the dentist!) :)

Our pet ducks are Shadrach, meshack, abednigo, mary, joseph, and elizabeth. Only the incubaor hatches the girls take part in during the summer get named. Any bird thats named doesn't get eaten or sold.

Wish I knew this a few years ago. The vet had my Golden Retriever on rimadyl, and finally had to put her to sleep. I HATE having to make that decision!

Interesting what you say on cost for previcox vs. equinox (?) the horse version. I have a 30 year old gelding on previcox because my horse vet says horse equiv. is $8/day and previcox is $2/day. I am only giving him 1/2 tablet (57 mg.) per day, which seems to be enough to control pain and is a little easier on my bank acct.
Now you are dealing with an area I feel confident advising, as I have personal and professional experience with this. If she is dealing with degenerative arthritis, start her on previcox (better than rimadyl). If you know a cool horse vet, you can get an equine version of previcox that is a fraction of the cost. You can supplement with glucosamine and chrondoitin too. These won't make her improve, but can help slow degeneration. If she looks depressed, you can get a scrip for tramadyl for "as needed". Finally, start her on fish oil as this is overall an excellent supplement. Also, if you can find a rehab place with an underwater treadmill, this is the best exercise to build muscle without impacting joints. Doggie acupuncture (especially if they can use hammer to break up calcifications) is great too.

This protocol gave my purebred intact male german shepherd a great boost when he was originally diagnosed with front leg deg. arthritis at age 9. When he started to fail on this program, we then designed a stronger end-stage program. He went strong until I finally put him down at 14.5 years old (and he still tried to bite my vet when the time finally came).

It is a tough choice to put a pet to sleep. I was bummed when our favorite dog developed cancer. We had surgery, removed it, and it tested badly. It came back just so quick, and withen a month or two, she was in terrable shape again, and I sadly ad to choose to save her from her pain.

Its hard to decided that its your job to choose if now is the time for a freinds life to end. Big hugs to anyone who is there, or has been there, or will be there to do that.

I kinda keep thinking, I'll just know when it's time. Sometimes I wish she would just quietly pass in her sleep. I know that sounds awful. Actually it probably doesn't. Ya'll know what I mean.

Its nothing but love that makes us want them to die peacefully in their sleep. We only want that for anyone we love, why not our dog family???

You will know, absolutely. When I was there, I had to call a friend and get her to remind me what I knew I needed to do. It was so hard. I love Ki so much, and she was a wonderful dog, friend, and daughter. We are all thinking of you, I'm sure.
