Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

My duck houses have a low light on all night, it keeps them laying all winter. Less than 12 full good hours a day decreases production. Put up a light, and they'll be laying in 2-5 days I bet.

Mine just have a string of solar christmas lights. It's kept the ducks laying all winter though and the chickens only took about 2 weeks off. I have 2 broodies already too.

Say, thats a good idea. Even cheaper, and still effective. Do they prefer regular or twinkel???

i am stalking ebay to try to get eggs for the hatch along lined up, i think i have to do chickens, because my bator won't be empty till about a week before, and they have to be cheap! any suggestions?

Quail!!! Cheap, give a lot, way cute eggs, and if you get Jumbo, it only takes about 4-5 to equal a real egg! LOL They are cute, and if your not a vegitarian, quite tasty.

Remember, don't line up eggs too soon! For turkeys, ducks and geese, in date is March 10. for Chickens and such, March 17 or 18th. for quail, Its like March 21st (corturnix quail) On ebay your kinds stuck with when they get here.

ChicksOmy is knowlegable, and may give yu a nice quoite if you PM her about it. (She also has a web site) I'm getting some turkey eggs shpped special for the hatch from her. I've also ordered silkies here on BYC to be delivered fresh on time for the hatch.

If your gonna ebay for quail, let me PM you the good folks. Not all are that great, but some have fabulous eggs!

my hubby said no to quail this time but MAYBE in the future, the only reason he agreed to me doing it at all is i found a buyer for a few of my duckling due in the begining of march, and i have to sell or give away all chickens that come from this hatch, or maybe all but 2 or 3

There is a market for corturnix...they can be flight trained, and hunters buy them for hunting on their property. Quail eggs are a delicacy, you may be able to talk a local oriental food store into talking special orders for them . Tell him they are dress ready in 6 weeks, and laying in 7.
\Good luck!
