Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

That is a little far, but I just got quail eggs from Oregon a few monthes back, and my hatch rate was still high. I think its more important you have a thoughtfull shipper, who uses enough protecive wrap, and then many layers of insulating material to protect from rough handling and weather change. If they ship fresh, and back good, you should get a hatch out. I'd go for it if I were not allready going to be up to my eyeballs in little fluffy popcorns with toothpick legs!

Think my bosses will be able to keep me in at least 2 dozen duck eggs every 28 days if I feel the urge. But what I really want is some Saxonies and can't find them local.

Wow just when

Hey Julie. So, if you want earlier moonflowers, you have to start them inside in extra large peat pots, and set the whole thing out in mid-may (mine would have been growning since, well, about now....) I put mine into a larger pot with dirt when the get 12" long, then they transplant with less shock. Ditto morning glory. the chickens probobly love the big seeds, just don't give them too many of the heavenly blue seeds!!!!

Id think true wild rose would be an ok choice, but you know how much chickens love to scrach and play in the soft dirt at the base of big plants. You may just have to put up an itty bitty bit of fence to shelter their roots, so the chickens don't tear them out.

Ok, I'm really off to bed this time.

I started mine pretty late last year. Since the winters been so mild I'm hoping they reseeded themselves and will come up. I do have a packet of seeds and will try to start them earlier this year. And I'm keeping my chickens away until they've started good. We have wild roses growing on our fence, I was going to try to get some starts from them and see if I can get them going. I figure the thorns will give extra protection, lol. I'm thinking some chicken wire to block off the bases of the plants, and the plants should be able to grow through it fine so I can leave it to protect the roots. C'mon spring!
Good night!
