Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

Hi Everyone!
frow.gif

What day are they due, SM? My giant white pekings are due the 24th. Maybe we can be duck hatching buddies!
For awhile anyways. I have a bunch of Pekin and Runners in one incubator that should hatch in about a week and then all of the Pekins, runners and most of the chickens will be leaving.

so i candled my eggs .
half of the eggs still have not had air cells drop yet.
why??

i have 4 that are internally pipped.
i can c 3 of them in the air cell but 1 i cant. (but its one i know had internally pipped) kinda worried about it.
how long do i wait before i intervene? this one also has a little bit of blood in the air cell. as if he had it on his beak and got it on the inside.??

and then theres 1. that the aircell hasnt dipped. but looks like it punctured the air cell. cant really explain it. but it looks funny.

Well, with two days to go, and knowing the duck preclivity towards waiting and sleeping a lot, I think I would still wait a bit. (I know its hard) It is conceivable that the duck with blood appearing on the egg may have broken a vessel. A little mess is not overly uncommen, but I sympathize with your concern.

In my opinion, I would not intervene just yet, however, a small hole where you have candled the air sac at won't hurt, and may help the one you are concerned over. I am usually a hands off hatcher however, and I'd worry more about disrupting everyones hatch through moisture loss at this crucial time. IMO.

I don't know if it sounds good, CG. You see blood?

just like a tiny spot of blood.
but i can see him moving still.

any idea why the other air cells have done nothing? all babies are still active tho. (except the questionable 1 )

im so anxious with this being my fist real hatch.
and the fact that its calls. and everyone says they are soo hard.
ughh.

Well, I've just candled my goose eggs. I set 4 giant toulouse (great big eggs) last Saturday, and 2 are embryo positive. I also received 4 sebastopol and 1 extra small toulouse egg on Monday, and set them that night. EVERY SINGLE ONE candled embryo positive. Its the very first 100% embryo developing eggs I've ever had shipped.

you have babies soon!

Plug the vent holes, use hot water to help quickly raise the humidity through steam.

Here are some of this weeks eggs.

right is the austrolope
top are Easter Eggers
bottom are Ameracuana
middle is a pullet egg

I have one internal pip. I need to turn the other eggs in there sometime this afternoon so I'll check for more then.

hope you have more to come!

They supposedly hatch and zip longways on the shell, which would be neat to see too.

I woke up this morning and looked out and saw 2 little call ducks bobbing around in the pool. Ran outside, everyone else in the brooder where they should be. I let them out and they made a beeline for the mud puddle. Ducklings got out of the pool, came and got their sisters, and went back up to the pool. My little magpie jumped back in and quacked until they all got in with her. Bossy little thing, lol. Guess since they are off heat and old enough I would be putting them in with everyone else if they were bigger ducks I'll be building a pen inside the run for them today. No escapees anymore, and they can start getting aquainted with future room mates.

it will serve her well to be bossy in the future!

Sorry I have been gone so long, been busy with hatches and yard work and everything else. Hopefully this will make up for me being gone so long. I put dots on their heads when I was vent checking so I would know which ones were which. 7 gilrls and 1 boy!!

she hated these babies being with her.

Little Crelo chicken

Lovely pics! I NEED more pekins now!

what kind is the "momma" duck? she is gorgous!

I ususally hatch Khakis and regular Pekings, and they aren't like quail, they come all at different times, except in very large hatches (of say 50) where many come in 24 hours. There is always a first, and a last (if your lucky) and one might have been closer to heat source, and is ready now. The ones toward the dead center can be slower. It just works that way for me. Perhaps this is the explanation.

I have some special Jumbo Pekings baking, and I'm worrying over them constantly. I really want them, and I've only 7 of 13 original eggs. Seems like every 3 or 4 days, one goes south. I don't lockdown until the 21st. My last hatch (turkeys and quail) went south after an egg blew up. As a result, I've started candling more. I've bleached, I used a new bator, I'm monitoring like every other die hard hatch addict. I think I'm gonna go have some leftover green beer.
