Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

Hey Marty, that is how I feel about the 2 Cayuga eggs. Am surprised to see movement stll tonight on day 22. I am planning to help them. All 8 Ancona "take a chance" eggs are rocking, including the one with the bad crack. I have 3 blues, so I will get to see if they hatch out more pretty colored babies.

I also see spiders in all 6 new Cayuga eggs on day 4. I have a great feeling about them!
And, dare I say it.. I think I see a teeny beginning spider in the one intact air cell Toulouse egg from Erin. Still holding out hope for 2 others too.

YEAH !

Hope you have some bouncing babies soon!

so i have a question.
both babies have their eyes closed.
is this normal?
they are both very active. wiggling, and going thru peeping spurts.
could their eyes be dried shut from the membrane?

It is nowing here right now !!!! REALLY!
This is very very weird weather for us WA peeps.

I LOVE growing my org tomatoes! That is the one thing I plant that I carefully cultivate!
My prize tomatoe is the Giant Belgium! But I do like the Mortgage Lifter, and The Cherokee!
I want to garden so bad ~ IF the weather will ever permit ... Ah Spring where are you

Wow. Big Rainbow. I've seen pictures. I could only dream of a tomato as big as those sometimes get! I actually got two beautiful Oxhearts this past season. Mmm. Right off the vine, warm. Heaven. Just as tasty: sliced with a little cajun seasoning.

I love BLT's with fresh tomato and turkey bacon.

Rhubarb & asparagus are on my 2 do list this spring. Is it to late to plant?

I don't even feel like thinking about gardens right now. Been sooo busy with all these ducklings and eggs hatching and planting stuff for them. I need a break, and now I've got to get things going for the garden quick. Got my grass/wildflower mixture planted a few days ago in the chicken yard. Been throwing handfuls of the quails birdseed out there too cause why not? Just want something besides dirt in there for them. The daffodils hubby dug up and planted in there for them are blooming nicely, and the chickens are being good and leaving them alone. I planted some rhubarb and asparagus in there too. Had to put it somewhere, bought too much lol. It's caged off until it's set, and so is the grape vine I planted along their fence. If it doesn't rain tomorrow morning I'm planting morning glories and peas. Need more tomato seeds started too. My 7 year old Evelyn will eat a pint of cherry or grape tomatoes a day, she loves them. I also need to take some cuttings to start rooting so I can grow something on the chickens fence to give them some shade in the run. And need to clean out some of the brush and trees that have been growing along the fence, so I can try blackberries there again. I'm so happy to be spending my days outside again though, and the kids are loving being outside too.

If you grow Martha Washington from seed, it will only set you back a year, but they are VERY hardy from seed, and much less likely to die than crowns. Oh, and we planted about 50 sq ft for $1.50. The seedlings are tiny tiny, and you have to water very often, and it take a while to germinate, but by fall, they will be established and slendor. Three years later, lots of ones to pick. And, Marthas are self seeding......

Thats what I grow, becasue its a harsh environment here in summer, but they are doing awesome, 10 years later. I recomend this to anyone who can remember to water every day or other day (when it didn't rain that night). Totally worth the trouble. Fabulous flavor, and wonderful stalks.

Thats funny that you have probs growing tomatoes because of TO much sun, where on the complete other side of the states here in WA we have trouble in my area for NOT getting enough sun

Still be sure to PM me if you have more questions as I can usually get on long enough to PM back.
Sue can you email me again? Can not find the first one.
Two boxes of eggs going out today, hubby will try working half a day today, and more eggs hatching around here.
Someone asked about poopy butt. In chicks they get a warm water bath under running water then the fuzz trimmed. Adult hens sometimes also need a trim. We have a white EE who gets trimmed and a bath about every 4-6 weeks cause she just doesn't stay clean.
Dusted the entire flock of chickens this weekend, sprayed the roosts and nest too. Next week we get to deworm the entire flock. Will take all of the morning to get them all done. Oh and have a blue EE hen in the hospital pen in the brooder house. She has a mild bumble foot case, but hasn't skipped a day of laying.
Love all of the garden talk. Tomatoes are a challenge here with our heat as is lettuce, but I plant them anyways.
Going to build an arbor to set grapes on, should provide great shade when they climb across the top.

I would greatly appreciate anyone's help.... I purchased a Little Giant incubator and egg turner and have filled it with our duck's eggs starting 2/27/12. I did not realize you could hold the eggs and put them in all together so these have gone in every day. We have candled some and removed the non fertile ones.

The first ones should be removed from the egg turning this Friday 3/25 and some each day if I do the suggested 25 days. Can I make this work with one incubator by possibly removing some of the rows of egg turners or should I go buy a hatching incubator? And can I stabilize the humidity with opening the incubator during hatching if I only use one incubator? My kids are hatching these and we have had enough trauma from predators with our adult ducks that I don't want to have a lot of them not make it.

Thanks!

If you can, I'd buy another bator. A still air would work great. You really have to keep the humidy up for those in lockdown the last thee days. If your going to be opening and closing a lot, your gonna need another. The ducks in the bator need up to 60% during days 1-25, but then they need like 75%.

They just have different needs. You maybe able to make a bator for hatching, depending on your confidence levels.
