Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

Hi everyone! I have a pair of ducks breeding right now, so I expect a hatch in roughly 2 months! Ducklings!

I internally pipped it. Like the other one, there was too much blood (from the baby trying to pip, not from me) to mess with trying to free beak, but I can see it breathing now. I have it in hatcher with other baby. Really don't think either will make it, but ya never know.

Thank you, QJ. You just taught me a valuable skill. I used a sharp edged tool (like an exacto knife) to score it, then peeled shell off. Was easy and did not disturb outer membrane. Then I took a sterile syringe needle to poke hole through the outer... peeled away with tweezers... then I poked a hole through inner membrane. It was a good exercise, no matter the outcome. Wish I knew to do it that way last night... probably would not have caused as much damage to that egg.

Wow you really have a lot going on... I am pulling for you and your babies!

Here's a recent pic of my little early bird.

He is doing well... some yolk and piece of shell stuck on him. Should I try and clean or just wait... he is not 24 hrs yet.

Dumb newbie question: My hatching incubator stinks... I cleaned up this guys shell and fluids but I know some hatching fluids are still in there as well he rolled around on the other eggs and incubator. Two of the eggs that were closest to him are getting dark spots in the air sack area. I candled them and felt like I saw movement but they have not internally pipped yet (definitely pulsing in one). They are due to hatch 3/28 but went into the hatching incubator a little early since their companion egg was hatching early. I'm fine with letting things be unless you guys think otherwise? Here is a picture of the eggs - the one on the left has also started a yellow ring and that is shadow on the lower right egg (the pencil air sack markings are not current). My guess is that the early humidity have messed things up since they went into the hatching incubator too early? I just want to remove bad eggs from the hatching incubator if that is what has happened... not intervene in the hatching process.

Yay! What kind of ducks?

That's how I pip all of mine so I can find the bill without pulling away all the membrane. Usually you can tell where the beak is because of the yellowish/brown color. Does that make sense?

Goodness. What is that? I definitely wouldn't interfere just yet. But I'm not real sure what to make of that.
Unless it's the lighting.. Air cells don't look just right. I would put the lowest part of the air cell facing up. And keep a close eye on those.

And that first little baby is pretty much Precious! I'd give him some more time to get the gunk off. I don't like messing with that cord until about 3 days later.

sbost, I use a warm damp washcloth to remove pieces of shell and yuck. But it won't hurt to leave it be.

Not sure what to tell you about the other eggs, although I have seen the yellowing before in air cell area and had them hatch out on their own ok.... and while I have saved a few eggs that externally pipped but could not hatch out, internally pipping eggs is new territory for me and I am currently blindly going with my instinct with the 2 eggs I just internally pipped.

It's not the cord... it dried birth liquids on his neck and back and a few small pieces of shell. I'm not sure what he is but we are just so excited with out first hatch!

I updated my previous post and you might not have seen it... I wanted to clarify I didn't want to try and intervene... just remove any bad eggs if advised or just let things be that the stink could be normal from the hatch of the first one.

Julie your eggs are now in the han of the usps =)
