Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

cr8z, What was the size of aircell at lockdown? Did you perform eggtopsys on the dead in shell babies? Did they internally pip? Were they in final hatching position? Was the inner membrane dark and gummy in texture or white and plastic shrink wrap looking?

Morning report:

Injured buff girl is looking better. Swelling not as bad this morning as yesterday, and she and her grey dewlap boy look so cute cuddling together. Hate having to drain her face 3x a day, but I think she is realizing that we are not going to kill her when we pick her up and is not stressing quite as bad when she gets treated. But it is sad to enter and see her go into back corner and turn her back to me while all the greys excitedly run to me.

At least the other two new buff babies are warming up nicely! Last night, we put them in their own garage pen adjoining the other two pens to make sure they could have free access to food/water without getting bullied, but hope after another full day of turnout with Barley and the ducks, they will be accepted.

Spirit turned 3 weeks old yesterday and has gone 48 hours without falling!

We are going to take all the indoor babies outside for some exercise today. Fingers crossed Spirit has better balance moving around than the last time she went outside.

Thanks RS Cute duckling!

Glad she is looking better today, Utah! And glad Spirit is doing well too!

My mind has been blown:

Kevin565: Looks like German Shepherd Pomeranian Mixes

Marty 1876: Heres a pic of my newest sebbie. Its a girl. My lone grey dewlap is a boy. I gave in after years, and got bifocals. Now I can see to vent sex.

Its much easier than making my kid hold the bird, and me get the vent ready, and grab the magnifying glass to peek, or try....

Iain Utah: Rachel, thanks. She is doing a little better today and is happy to have a grey dewlap buddy, but not warming up to hubby or me... Can't say I blame her.

Cute duckling! Is the mark on beak and face the coloring? Otherwise, it looks like my Cayuga hatchlings.

Jaz, glad you got a great Cayuga ratio! Did you get your fancy eggs yet?

Yes, it's just the coloring on the face and beak that has me a little confused. lol. I see Cayuga everywhere else though. A little babe. Don't know the sex, don't know how to vent and am too scared to try. I always just wait for the curl on the tail feathers

Jaz, look for reed grass, red millet and there is another seed the name escapes me but give it when I grab the bag from outside. They are edible, hold up to traffic from feathered critter feet too, and provide coverage. Also make sure you install electric wire around the very top if you use a flight net as the top. It stops most predators from climbing the sides and trying to get in from above.
We have built two flight pens, and will be building third. They are a ton of work, but so fun to sit and watch the birds when they are done. Post pictures as you go. There is a thread here on BYC showing off aviaries too if you haven't seen it before.
Congrats on a fun day of vent sexing. Triple check those older geese as it is very hard to get a boy to pop once they are feathered in (the size of the ones you recently posted) and there have been many "girls" who we're really ganders that just didn't pop.

I already bought the seeds to plant, did my research

. I don't jump into anything without being prepared. I got it covered when it comes to putting up electric fences, not worried about ANY predators getting in, I just have to make it dog proof for my dogs. I have no predator problems, thanks to my dogs & my neighbors for the need to hunt & shoot anything furry!

I have built one flight pen in the side yard for my guineas & it turned out really nice, but I want something different, kinda like a oasis type. I had already vent sexed my geese when they were babies, but I did not band them at the time (which I will do now from now on

), & when I vet sexed yesterday I still have the same number of boys & girls as before, now they are just labeled!

Just wanted to give you all a pic of the lil one all dried out. I think my Rouen got hold of my cayuga girl. This should be an interesting mix?

Also made an order today for some Blue Swedish, and a mate for our Slate Blue Turkey! She's been trying to brood infertile eggs.

that they all make it okay! After everything I've been hearing, I'm pretty worried~!
GOOD luck on your BS & SB !!!

& what a cute duckling, are you keeping it ?

PRETTY SEBBIE BABY! Nice bifocals

(is this large enuf for you?)

Returned home to utter chaos. I need to get my hubby away from the children before he ends up on the looney bin. So I took him outside, pointed to his money pit boat and told him he was going fishing next weekend or else. The "or else" option is that I'm sending him off to the farm to volunteer on the weekend helping fix tractors. I want him out of the house.

OH I know what you mean! When hubby stays home to long etc. ~ He needs to go on a " BUCK RUN " (what we call a male night out fishing/camping with just the boys! Usually involves a hangover in the morning

Jaz, Oh my!! I thought I spent a lot of money on my dewlaps... but your fancy bird eggs cost more than my entire dewlap flock. I can't wait to see pics of your aviary in progress and the babies when they hatch!
Well if I didn't think my Bator could hatch them, I wouldn't have bought them! I found a Swinhoe pair for $400. They are a year old.... I haven't decided if I am getting them in the fall??? We will see what hatches & survives ! I may not hatch anything.....

GLAD to see all is doing well !!!! & the injured buff girl will recover & then you can give her all the LUVS and she will forget all this yucky business!

Thanks for the warm wishes for my injured girl. We are trying very hard to make this experience as gentle as possible for her and hope she will warm up to us once she feels better. By the way, hubby said Platinum is too much of a mouthful to say... so he suggested Porsche. What do you guys think?

Jaz, If anyone can hatch exotic birds with success, it will be you!! I know it!!

I saw Caboose (cayuga drake) and Twist (cayuga duck) trying to do the dirty this morning, so we are separating the boys/girls today! Boys get a separate pen that opens to the pasture and girls get to stay in the coop. We are also moving our two confused ducks that have been raised with Barley over to the coop with the girls. I am excited to have all the ducks sorted out and their living quarters permanently set up!
