Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

Bummer! Sounds like shrink wrap problems, not fertility. It is extremely hard to maintain humidity in an LG still air (I know, because that is what I use in a desert!) Also, it is easy to get false humidity readings depending on how/where the gauge is placed. Best I can tell you is to seal the lid better to bottom and add a damp sponge into each corner, in addition to filling all the reservoirs.

Also, with still air, you want your temp to be 101 (2 degrees higher than of your bator had a fan).
I wish I could help, but I have never used any of the styrofoam bators ....

I would have reacted the same way if you know the animal is in "bad" shape (& we all know what that is) , UNLESS you are planning on taking it to the vet & footing the bill. Otherwise to me it is just suffering....
I even thought about taking it to the vet but at that point I knew there was no recovering. It was throwing up way too much blood. I hope it went peacefully with the neighbor. I know he means well but I really wish he would let us rehome some of "His" cats. They're is probably close to 50 cats right now roaming the neighborhood.

I know, it's so frustrating. I have two diapers in there including all three reservoirs full and right now I've got my humidity up to 54%. I'm also going to try misting my eggs this time after day 4. I'll up my temp too. All I can do is see what happens! I hate this trial and error, but I guess its expected until I can figure out what works.

On a better note, my little guy, who I named Hercules, is doing well and I'm so proud of him.

I'm in agreement over the shrinkwrap issue. Never used an LG, but I have to make sure my lids are on just-so otherwise there are problems.

Hercules. Another cute name! I need to come up with a theme and some names for my keepers. I usually wait until I see a striking personality trait.
Am I just heartless?

So today I was taking the dogs out and there was a cat on the drive. Fairly normal but I went over to investigate. It ended up that it was hit by a car. It's eyes were blood shot and spitting up blood. My first reaction was to grab the gun and put it out of it's misery. Before I could make it to the door, the neighborhood old man came over to look at it. (He basically takes care of all the stray cats and calls them his own.) He ended up taking it with him and stayed with it before it passed. Should my reaction been so quickly to dispatch it? Am I really that heartless? When he picked it up it was crying and meowing and I'll admit it pulled at my heart strings and I did cry a bit. I haven't had the guts to go over and ask him if it's passed yet.... I'm not sure I honestly want to know.
I think I would have done the same. Only had hubby do the mercy killing. I can barely make it through culling a suffering bird.

Threw out a bunch of eggs today. One silkie duck, 5 white runners and 7 assorted ducks. Still got some silkie ducks moving actively. Disappointed in the fertility in the shipped white runners. I'd be livid had I paid for them. Haven't told hubby yet. The assorted ducks are from my flock. Need to get the boys a new copy of PlayDrake.

Fred update...... whee she was nesting one of the babies got out the back and she didn't see it. So we resqued baby..... the proceeded to move the family. Fred and Ethel Were Not HAPPY! Knowing that moving her would probally break her off the nest we had the bator on stand-by. got them moved and gave back one of the 2 babies that were fully hatched. The other was kinda flippy so we brought it in for vitamins and to keep an eye on it. Hatched and gave her more of the babies today. She's up to 4, the last one was SW. I have it's head out now and it's making noise.

Hoping it does the rest by it'self and make it. I figure 5 babies for one year olds and their first hatch is pretty good. Fred has learned that I'm not taking her babies, just making sure they have food and water and know where the baby food is

I plan to give vitamins in the water till all 5 stop flipping and are doing good. Pics tomarrow and pics of my new Black Sumatra chickens

Morning report:

Injured buff girl is looking better. Swelling not as bad this morning as yesterday, and she and her grey dewlap boy look so cute cuddling together. Hate having to drain her face 3x a day, but I think she is realizing that we are not going to kill her when we pick her up and is not stressing quite as bad when she gets treated. But it is sad to enter and see her go into back corner and turn her back to me while all the greys excitedly run to me.

At least the other two new buff babies are warming up nicely! Last night, we put them in their own garage pen adjoining the other two pens to make sure they could have free access to food/water without getting bullied, but hope after another full day of turnout with Barley and the ducks, they will be accepted.

Spirit turned 3 weeks old yesterday and has gone 48 hours without falling!

We are going to take all the indoor babies outside for some exercise today. Fingers crossed Spirit has better balance moving around than the last time she went outside.
