The spray we have is completely natural. Only peppermint oil and some other inactive ingredients. The chews were made by a neighbors all - natural pet company, they probably aren't that potent either. The only real tick - killing thing is the liquid we got from the vet. It has permethrin and one other thing, can't remember the brand.
My all natural stuff doesn't work as well when the weather is warmer with tick populations so high. The liquid from the vet will kill them when they bite, they'll still crawl on your dog, but will instantly die the first bite they take which almost prevents disease from being transmitted. There's a slight chance your dog can still get a disease from them but it's a slim chance if they're protected. Most things do not repel ticks because ticks don't technically work that way like fleas or mosquitoes. They're annoying creatures!

we get our tick control from the vet. it is a liquid in a tube . you squeeze a few drops at the neck, and then work along the spine to the tail.
it lasts for about 3 months on our 100 pound dogs..It is a bit pricey, but we had a dog get lymes disease. and that cost us over ten years worth of tick control.. like the one in my avatar picture.

guinea hens are the best tick and bug control you can get..
I used to pick off at least 10 ticks from myself after mowing the lawn. I have not had a tick on me for over 15 years since I got guineas..

Ticks are one of the reasons I have chickens. Without them I'd probably find more than one on me! My 4 dogs have pretty much stayed protected. I've found a few but they're dead since they're protected.

Thank you guys for the responses! I think I may try the collar. I feel bad putting chemicals on my pet, but I really don't want him getting some disease.

Can you call your vet before you do the collar? The stuff you got from the vet lasts 30+ days and adding another treatment can do more harm than good.

By the way... Thank you for being a responsible dog owner. I've noticed many people in my area don't take preventatives seriously and a lot of dogs suffer because of it!

I am not a fan of collars. They have chemicals on them too, but I don't understand how they work.

The medication on them is kind of like an oil and it slowly releases into the dogs skin then into their bloodstream. It's similar to the liquid meds except it's in the collar itself instead of you squirting it on.

The chewable tablets the meds are in the chews and when it's digested the medication realeases to all parts of the body through the bloodstream.
