The medication on them is kind of like an oil and it slowly releases into the dogs skin then into their bloodstream. It's similar to the liquid meds except it's in the collar itself instead of you squirting it on.

The chewable tablets the meds are in the chews and when it's digested the medication realeases to all parts of the body through the bloodstream.

To add, there's Lyme disease vaccine for dogs, which does help, and have the vet run an annual blood test for tick borne diseases with that heartworm test. Ticks carry several nasty diseases, and dealing with them before illness develops is best.

Be careful giving any meds to an Australian shepherd unless it's been tested to see if it carries the MDR1 gene. If it does carry it, your dog could sensitive to some medications. So discuss this with your vet. One of mine would have seizures after getting Heartguard, so now she gets sentinel for a heartworm preventive instead. There are other drugs they can be sensitive to so ask your vet before using anything.
