Tis Time for a March 2020 Hatch-a-long!

I'm sitting here contemplating how much trouble I'd get in if I just popped into TSC just to "see" if their chicks are in yet...I am definitely not the person to go to for poultry discipline 🤣🤣
I have already been to my TSC and they did have chicks and ducks. I'm going tomorrow and Friday to get ducks. I have to drive a good ways to the near by towns to TSC but it worth the gas lol. My husband went yesterday to get mallards but they was out. They get a new order Friday at that TSC. I'm going to the other Town tomorrow for Rowens and what ever else that catches my eye.

Every time I go, there aren't any chicks! I live way up north so I wonder if we just have a later start to chick days. The big cage and hand sanitizer are out, though 🤔. If I can make it to Monday or so, then I can just sneak extra chicks into the brooder with my hatchlings and husband will never know the difference 😅 I want ducks this year, too, and TSC will be the easiest way to start as duckling shipping is INSANE. But....I might just try to find some cayuga hatching eggs 😉 as far as I know our TSC pretty much only does pekins.

Hi all. Not much time for BYC atm but hopefully I can get caught up this week.

Today is day 14 for our eggs already! Time is flying and I haven't had much time to babysit the incubator either, thank goodness for turners and humidikits. I candled this morning and all 8 are looking good; lots of movement and thick veins. Have a great day everyone!

Is it your first time in that incubator? Mine doesn't hold a steady temp unless I leave it in the Styrofoam it came in. If you look at the instructions, they include it as a part. I think they call it an insulator. Sorry if you already know this.
Yup, first time with the big one. The temp has thankfully been pretty steady. I got it used so it didn’t have the styrofoam that it came with initially, nor did it have the instructions.

Today is my batch-1 D18 yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay
:wee

I also peeked in on my batch-2 last night, which were on D4. Can't see into the darkest eggs, but 2 olive eggers and one opal legbar were started. Also thought I might have spotted something in a less-dark marans. One legbar was a clear, and when I cracked it the yolk was very, very pale, almost whitish. Never seen that before.

Thinking of jumping in to this one. I am rehoming my favorite cockerel I’ve grown out this year today. We are moving and I’d like to downsize for the move and having the property on the market.

I found a home that would take him with five hens so I think it’s best for all of us but man, I like him. So I think I’ll hatch a round of his babies. I’ve got 75 eggs from last week, I haven’t been storing tbem to hatch but they are mostly all pointy end down at least in egg flats. Think I’ll load up the bator and see what I get. They’ll all be English Orpington crosses or full English Orpingtons.

You should definitely hatch all of his babies!! Give away 1 rooster and 5 hens, then hatch 75 chicks 🤔...yep! That definitely adds up to downsizing chicken math style. lol

I mean chicks are vastly more portable. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I’m thinking of hatching a slew and keeping one or two easter eggers out of it and a couple of laced orpingtons out of it and selling the rest for a buck as barnyard mixes.

Very true! and I think any reason to hatch more chicks is a great reason! lol, Then again I may have overdone it again this year. I'm picking up more eggs tomorrow and trying to decide how in the world I'm going to squeeze them all into my incubators. 🤣
