Tis Time for a March 2020 Hatch-a-long!

Ugh, I had two pull another two marans from my second clutch, which is on D8. One was totally clear, the other was a blood ring, D2-3. So, once again, down to one viable BBS marans egg, and one probably-dead lav marans egg in that batch.

Of the hatch I'm just finishing up, the single BBS marans egg that developed has hatched, but has a little bit of herniation/yolk around the umbilicus, so it's just resting up. Seems more chipper by the minute tho.

The opal legbar is still struggling in its shell. Probably time to help a bit more. Assuming it gets out of the shell alive, I'll have had a 100% hatch rate on eggs that developed (14/14)!

I set 22, and 8 just never developed. One was a local egg, but the rest were shipped. Of the shipped eggs, everything except the BBS marans developed, because they were almost all infertile. All the other breeds developed and hatched.

Just did a quick candle on one of the eggs my silkie is sitting on (D6) There's an embryo in there! :weeI didnt candle any of the other eggs because it's cold outside, but I am so chuffed that at least one is developing. Means my rooster is doing his job and not missing the mark!

I will be collecting approx 9 of their eggs after this hatch to refill the Janoel 12, and 7 cayuga eggs will be shipped out to me on Monday 🤩:celebrate.

Hoping to get some frizzles out of my flock's eggs, otherwise they will just be interesting barnyard mixes! My understanding is that frizzle is a feather type, not a breed, so I have no idea what breed my frizzle roo really is. A mutt most likely, but his colors almost remind me of blue copper marans.

The legbar is out!! I peeled back one bit of dryish-membrane, and it rocketed out of the egg into my hand, like, "I AM DONE WITH THIS SHELL!"

Sounds like you and I don’t have the best luck with Marans. 😣 Glad to hear everything else sounds like it’s doing well!!!

It's seriously so weird. I did get a lavender marans and either a blue or black marans out of this hatch. The eggs they came from were not at all impressive, which is why I suspect this is the time I actually get females. :lau
