Tis Time for a March 2020 Hatch-a-long!

Yeah. But I mean 2 are hatched as of this morning...it’s only a group of 5. How would you go about investing when it’s just a pip? I am inclined to check things out soon since this past week I had 2 die after pipping because they couldn’t get out and I only waited until day 21 in the afternoon to try to help and I was too late.

If after 24 hours, it hasn't moved, I'd take it into a bathroom with a hot shower running, have some tweezers and a q-tip with neosporin ready. Peel back a bit of the shell upwards, so you can get some access to the membrane, and very delicately spread some of the neosporin over the membrane with the q-tip. It will become translucent and any vasculature will be apparent. If you see blood vessels or bleeding, put it back, it's just not ready yet. If the membrane is totally or nearly clear, it's probably ready to come out. You can start by stretching the membrane slowly and carefully back from the existing hole, to give it a little more wiggle room. Then put it back in the incubator and let it try again.

Ok I will wait until the morning then and sit on my hands lol. It’s definitely a real pip. It’s putting up a fight in there. I’m not always seeing beak but I can see some of its down and sometimes beak. It’s just acting differently than I’m used to. It’s not in there resting or working on a zip. It’s just wiggling around.

I'll be honest, your description sounds like shrink wrapping. They membrane at the pip side is very dark and your describing a chick that it pecking repeatedly at the same spot but not zipping correct? I would open the air cell to see what it looks like and apply some coconut oil to the membrane.

@BluebirdHomestead It's basically the same process as last month with your little malposition chick but it's waaaay easier because your chick is pipped.

Yes, always open air cell just in case. No matter what is going on during an assist I always open the air cell first...unless it's a dried out membrane and the chick is completely zipped but stuck, then it's as simple as breaking the dry membrane.

If you know the chick is inside the air cell after candling you can just use her pip hole because it's much easier but if she pipped below the air cell I would open the air cell to check the membrane before widening pip.

If it's shrinkwrapped, which I agree with @CluckNDoodle it sounds like it maybe, it'll work out to the same process either way. You'll just go very slowly to let the blood vessels recede, and give it every opportunity to do the work itself in between your assistances. Keep those membranes moist.
